Optics for a varmint rifle

Get a new Leupold VX2 3-9x40 for $300.00 Use it on your 22-250 for now. In the future get a higher power VX2 4-12x40 scope. And put the 3-9 on your new hunting rifle that you'll surely have by then. If It were me I'd save 100 bucks more and get the VX2 4-12x40 now and be done with It.

While its above your price range, I would consider a Leupold with 12 power and their Target dot.

Oddly, the Target dot is not that expensive as an selection.

More or less you either get a good deal on a 12 power or better Leupold or order one from the factory as a Target/ larger dot (I am partial to small dots) . A few bucks more than the standard reticles as you sort of get credit for not having one.

Other option is a used one or a great deal and sending it in. They only do Leupold so the Redfield is out.

something you want to check out as they have other dots and I do not shoot varmints (there aren't any to shoot up here, politicians are exempt unfortunately )

I got to shoot a Target type dot a few weeks ago and its the reticle for me, I dont' do well with fine crosses but the dot was perfect.

Earlier reply mentioned the Mueller Eradicator 5-25 scope. Came home from a gun show with one several months ago. Now wish I'd bought three of them from the dealer selling them. Dealer claimed he'd bought some bankrupt wholesaler inventory and was selling them for $45 each. Rather good optics in mine and I do like its target dot fine cross hair. 1/8" turret adjustments in it have proven to be reliable and have a good feel to them. Its a decent scope that as I recall has a retail price of around $260.

Today, I will use my Mueller on my most accurate rifle in a 400 yard competition at range I'm a member. One of my competitors in this event was with me when I bought the scope and he owns some pricey optics (talking $500 to $1200) for his paper shooting. He's viewed thru my Mueller a number of times now at range and is impressed with the scope's optics.

Thanks for all the input. I ended up with a Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50 AO.

Shot it yesterday and was very happy with it. Love the magnification it offers.
