Trijicon 3-9x Accupoint works quite well on my M1A Scout. Very quick accuisition at shorter ranges, but also has the magnification for longer shots.
Fiber optic illumination, no batteries to deal with.

Only drawback is at ranges past 250 yards. I have mine zeroed at 100 yards, and the post-only reticle makes hold over a bit harder to judge at extended range, but once you get used to it, it works OK.

Amp,

Yes, IIRC it's 6.5-20x50mm. I would recommend high rings. I had ARMS #22 Medium rings on an old scope but could not get the scope to mount.

Keep in mind, my rig is a dedicated long range rig. For an all around 7.62 rifle, I think an ACOG would do well.

I am really torn between what to put on this thing. I like the simplicity and ruggedness of the TA11, yet I feel that having the variable power magnification with illuminated reticle would be more useful.

I don't believe I would ever take a shot over 400 yards while hunting, would you be able to identify whether a deer at that range would be a doe or buck with a 3.5x scope?

It would be nice to be able to identify targets more closely, but being able to see that distance would want you to take a shot you normally wouldn't take. Also, I'd say the VX-R is not as durable and requires batteries for the illuminated dot.

So I'm not sure which direction to go.

SmokyBaer,
Which reticle did you go with?

Firedot Duplex
Ballistic Firedot
Firedot Circle
Firedot 4

I'm thinking I like the ballistic firedot.

MOShooter...

MOShooter, that's a nice setup. Have you thought about relocating that forward sling mount to the free float tube?

Well I think I've got it, I'm gonna put a Trijicon TA648-308 red chevron sight on it. There, I feel better.....at least until I have to pay for it :(

That thing is HUGE!!

I have a Bushmaster ORC in 7.62x51 after a couple of trial scopes (one red dot,Tasco and a 4x12 Leapers tactical) I now have fell in love with the Nikon M-223 2x8x32 with the RAT(rapid action turret). Very clear glass, the 2x allows you to have both eyes open for close range work and with 8x on tap that can be used for longer shots.

sailskidrive

Thanks sailskydrive,
I didn't know what types of aftermarkets were available for the DPMS LR308's,mounting the sling on thr free floating forearm would be much better than on the barrel. Are you aware of any manufactured mounts that would work on my DPMS LR308?
Thanks again

my ar10 does different dutys at times. I is a whitetail, deer and pig hunting gun. Its a self defense gun and a gun to just play with at targets out to about 500 yards at the range. Ive had a few differnt scopes and sights on it but for the most part have settled on a accupoint 1x4x30. One 1x its almost as fast as a dot up close and on 4x still has enough magnification for hitting targets at 500 yards. Only thing that comes close to the versitility of this setup is possibly an acog.

This is mine. Premier Heritage 3.5 to 15

I'm running the ballistic Firedot. The hatch marks are about 4 inches.
Very clear glass. Half the cost of an M4. Vary ring is pretty solid.
Button on side to activate the dot.

Downside.. On 4x your eye has to be center or you'll get a ring.

I do not know what sort of hunting you want to do.A whole lot of successful hunting has been done with a 308-30-06 class rifle with a 4x scope.
Magnification is one thing, optical quality is another.IMO,the ACOG scopes offer high grade optics.I have 2 brothers with AR-10-T's,and both use the 5.5X acogs very well,at any range prudent to shoot game with using a 308.
I do not understand why some folks sour grapes Leupold. But,I do not need to understand. A 2.5-8 VX3 with either a Mil-dot or Boone and Crockett reticle, topped with a CDS knob would be good, also. Its a good, compact scope.IMO,the big observatory size scopes get a bit clunky on an AR

ZAK SMITH,

Very nice discussions of types I, II, and III distances and uses. Military experiences now in Afghanistan show it has become a 300-1,000 yards riflemens' contest, with Nato arms and optics facing imported and latest modern Russian, Chinese, and Austrian heavy sniper specialized rigs. Iraq was a mostly point blank urban and a few remote settings for standard foot fighters. Now the new battles on "A" plains and mountains are longer range. NATO needs to be in the .308 and above business thinking medium and longer ranges, and lesser use of .223 items ranged in 300-600 maximums.

Little brother took his AR-10 out to check sights. This is 300 yds .I don't know maybe it would be better if he was using something besides a Leupold snob scope? Its the same 3.5 -10x M-3 our military was using on the Rem 700 sniper rifles.
I also suppose it might be better if he was using match bullets instead of 165 Ballistic tips stuffed in WW cases, pushed with Varget. He also has a 5.5 x ACOG he uses on it in the woods.
A while back I posted a 600 yd or so target from this rifle that showed similar accuracy.(see thread "New Kreiger barrel in AR-10 shoots)Its only 3 shots,I'm not calling it .xxxMOA,but something seems to work right.(partly the new Kreiger bbl)
Depends on what you want to do.I think hundreds of thousands of very successful hunters would be shocked to learn they could not possibly have killed all that game with a fixed 4x Weaver on the '06.It baffles me to hear an ACOG is not a good hunting scope.I know folks who use them with a big grin on their face.I'll bet on little brother, with this rifle,to hit clay pigeons at 500 yds with this rifle and his 5.5x ACOG.
Of course, there are other good scopes, but neither of these is wrong.
