Opinions for my 1st .357 Magnum

~

You can get a 6" Ruger GP-100 NEW for less than $450, I assume (here, they go for the same price as the 4"). That's part of the reason I recommended it. You don't have to scour the used-gun pages on the web, and you don't have to take any risk with internet vendors or pay the FFL and shipping. You can just walk in to a sporting goods store and buy one.

Our 4" GP-100 cost just $379, and it is a sweet gun. Magnums fire without much fuss (but a lot of fire). I imagine a 6" would be that much easier.

I actually really like the 6" for all around purposes. Home defense, plinking, hiking, hunting, camping. It offers no immediate increase in close range or quick accuracy, but definitely better long-range accuracy. I love shooting my Ruger GP100 6" at over 50yds. It is primarily what I use it for. I find that the extra weight of a 6" really tames the 357Mag, especially when using pretty hot loads. I like 3-4" revolvers for carry, and generally use watered down low-recoil loads that make about 450ft/lbs of energy.

Don't count out Taurus

I know you'll read threads about people not liking taurus, but I'm sure there are nearly as many who don't like S&W or Ruger that well. Give the Taurus line a good look. Especially the 66 or 627 tracker in .357.

1. s&w 686, 66, model 27
2. Ruger GP100

These seem to be in my price range used.

The model 28 is, but a model 27 is pretty much a "stealth python," commanding a premium, based on gun auctions, that would make finding one for under $400 difficult, especially shorter barreled models; 8 3/8" barrels seem to command less money.

For your price range I'd suggest the following

first choice: Tie between a 4" S&W Model 28 or a Ruger Security/Speed/Police Service Six with either a 3 or 4" barrel

Second choice: a Ruger GP 100 with a 3 or 4" Barrel

Third choice: S&W Model 19 with 4" barrel

Fourth choice: Taurus Model 66 with 3 or 4" barrel

MostToysWins,

I agree with the Ruger Security Six choice. Been shooting the same one for many years and it is 6" barrel model, accurate, reliable, and handles the mag loads with ease. Very ballanced feel, though the S&W models are great guns, but generally, go for more $$. My buddy has a Taurus and I have shot it at the range several times and it is fine, but lacks the feel of the Rugers and S&W's.

Best bet: continue to save until you can get the one you want the most.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great resonses!
