well it's running better than 3 to 1 against the overbore weatherby 300. I guess I'll hang on to my 7mm-08 and if I need a serious thumper, I'll look to the .338 winchester magnum.

A few weeks ago, the local sport shop was selling new Weatherby Vanguards chambered in .257 Weatherby Magnum for $299.99. I don't know what they're going for in your area but unless a used Vanguard is priced substantially less than one you can buy new, I'd definitely opt for the new version. I know I did.

And welcome to The Firing Line, Right to bear arms (aka R T B A). :)

I think you should trade it for a 243 Winchester!

If you're mostly hunting Georgia whitetail, I can't see why you'd need a 7mm or 30 cal. 243 is also a good varmint and target caliber, and it won't beat you up as much.

Up here, where whitetails are more usually 150 lbs., 243 is still considered a good deer round.

If you're taking shots at over 200 yds. then maybe the magnum makes more sense, but I bet you're not! ;)

you'r absolutely right! I have a .243 and intend to use it this year. But rifles have been a lifelong "addiction" I love the melding of steel, wood, and synthetic. I love the way a bolt feels when you jack in a gleaming metallic brass case. Therefore I have many more guns than a sane person would need. I particular like bolt action rifles. I don't believe there has been a significant improvement over Paul Mauser's turnbolt design. I might buy a .338 or a .375 and never hunt game with it. It's just great to know that we live in a free country (for now) where the citizen can indulge in his pursuit of quality firearms. Everything else I buy inflates or depreciates rapidly. Meanwhile I can still crank a few accurate shots out of my 1917 enfield.

Welcome !

From personal experience taking a white tail with a 300 will blow the front shoulder OFF!!!!
A neck shot does quite a bit of damage as well but not near as bad as a heart or lung shot.
I'd stick with what you have but that's just me.
