B-Square makes a scope mount that clamps onto the Mauser rear sight without damaging anything, and no gunsmithing, hole-drilling etc. required.

I used one of these to mount a BSA red dot sight on a Swedish Mauser... My daughter, 18 at the time used this setup for her introduction to shooting a high-power rifle.

Her first three shots went into 1" at 100 yards.

The B-Square mount gives you a good scout type scope mount, just put a 2X or maybe 4X pistol scope on there and you're ready to go.

I have shot iron sights since 1957 and I am completely comfortable with them. most of the matches beyond 600 yards are iron sight.

But in low light situation like in woods they are all but useless. Case in point the iron sights on M1 Garand are OK on the range but in the woods with lots of shadows they are not acceptable.

Thus I have about six rifles set up as scout rifles. Two are Scout Scopes and the rest of handgun scopes, Bausch & Lomb and NC Star. a lot of folks pooh pooh NC Star but I have four of them and so far no problems at all. then again I zero them and let them alone.

The logic on handgun scopes is they have to be built heavier internally to take the recoil impulse of a handgun which is much more severe than a rifle.

ok i dislike peepsights but they are effective for shooting and marksmanship

they are readily available

but i just dont like using them (have one on my k31)

the LER scopes are usually not durable and there just arnt that many out there. but they are low in cost, and if you get the right one, it can handle the use and be very effective

If you're using it just for the range put on a pair of reading glasses that allow you to focus on the front sight and have fun. No need to alter an historic rifle, and drug store reading glasses are dirt cheap.
