Hi everyone, I'm getting a Turkish Mauser pretty soon, and I was thinking of putting either a scout scope setup on it or peep sights. I really don't want to alter the gun if I don't have to but I will.
Anyway your opinions and thoughts please. I'd leave the original sights on it, but my eyes are terrible:(
Thanks

Right now, I wouldn't do anyhing. After you receive your rifle, taking it to the range, and shoot it from a bench. If you are satisfied with the results, do nothing.

If you are unsatisfied with the result, you might be able to Mickey Mouse (with tape and cardbroad) am peep sight. If still unsatisfied, a red dot or scope would be the next step.

Good luck with your new toy.

Mauser (design) rifles are undeniably some of the best rifles -- with the absolutely worst sights -- ever designed
for someone with anything but Chuck Yeager's** fighter pilot eyesight.

Go with a peep sight to start to stay moderately classic (anybody can shoot a scope). ;)
It's amazing what an 0.052" aperture will do for them old eyes.

I might try the peeps. My brother has peep sights on his flintlock and that thing is a sniper rifle, although that has a lot to do with the rifle itself though

I you do want to change the sights something in a low power, ( 1X or 2X on the low end) mounted conventionally, will be faster than either peep sights or a scout scope for fast shooting. It will also be easier to use for longer range precision shooting.

The real reason Cooper suggested a forward mounted scope was to leave the ejection port on bolt rifles open to be able to use stripperclips. He tried to convince people it was a superior way to mount optics, but he was wrong.

.

Williams Gun Sight Co makes a drop-in peep sight which replaces the spring leaf & rear sight blade of a military Mauser's issue rear sight - the $25 WM-96 Peep.

Peeps are smaller, lighter and cheaper, but if you want a clear picture without straining your eyes, go with the scout. I have one on Argentine mauser. It has a carbine barrel in 7x57 and makes for a handy, fast handling rig.

if you are thinking about sights that mount to the rear sight posts without altering the gun then scout scope. peeps that far forward don't do a lot of good.

...peeps that far forward don't do a lot of good....
Oh... I dunno.

My `03A1's leaf peep/aperture is an absolute godsend -- with the Williams sight drilled out to 0.150 as it s apparently supplied, it would (I think) be a great field sight.

Now that I think about it, I wish I could put that A1 sight on my two Mausers.

I dunno guys....(again) ;)

That Garand peep battle sight system is mighty effective -- which is why we carried it forward untouched even unto the M1A:

...and then thereafter as a variant w/ the M-16/4/and ARs (an HBAR here):

For an extremely tough and compact system, it (and most quality peep/aperture variants) are hard to beat -- even with late 60's eyesight. :D :D

I started wearing bifocals about 15 years ago and I've worn glasses since about 6 years old. I find peeps the way to go for shooting up to a couple hundred yards but best at under 100 yards. so far I only have peeps on my 2 shorter range rifles one is a .30-30 Winchester and the other a H&R .45-70.

I just wish I had discovered peeps sooner. I know if I had, I'd have less than half as many scoped rifles...

I prefer a scope even though I have and enjoy several rifles with aperture sights. My 62 year old eyes really need the scope from 100 yards and beyond.

If you need glasses go with the scout scope.
I used to have better than 20/20 vision and never understood why anyone would want a scope. Now I understand. Even with new glasses that correct perfectly I find it much more difficult to get a good sight picture.
