Open carry problem in N. VA

This kind of crap needs to stop. If the people don't want open carry in their state/locality, get rid of it. But these guys had every right to carry, and it's out of line for a cop to go out of his way to harass them for doing so.

And seriously, what's with LEOs? If you're here and reading this, this probably doesn't apply to you, of course....but it seems as if some of your friends are about as supportive of our second amendment rights as an intern at the Brady Campaign. Are they just afraid to no longer be the only ones on the streets lawfully carrying? Do they like the sense of power of being the only one around with a gun? I know at some point you have to worry about your safety, but generally it isn't the guys openly carrying within the law or the folks who go through the trouble to get CHLs that you need to worry about...so why do they get harassed so often?

Yea, the two bad things there are:
1) being in the City of Manassas
2) ignorant cro-magnons behind badges

...not bashing cops but unfortunately there are an abundance of morons behind badges and that's one of the main reasons I left law enforcement years ago. I hope the "officials" involved get reamed.

This incident in Manassas was covered by Channel 4 News; that is where I heard of it... You would think the Manassas cops have something better to do than harass legal citizens...

Perhaps the cops could arrest all those illegal aliens in downtown or arrest the kids selling drugs under the Route 66/Sudley Manor bridge (yeah guys ... its pretty obvious that even we know what they are selling!)

And leave the legal citizens alone!

Here's the 911 call from the patron at Tony's pizza who started this whole mess (I found it in one of the comments).

The man even states to the 911 operator that he's sure there are laws that allow this but he's very uncomfortable with it.

My friend just pointed out the guy in the call has a Jersey accent. She's from there and picked it right up.

57 years, a Marine...and never seen OC?:barf:

Another illustration of the disconnect between a hundred-year-old law and modern public sensibilities. If open carry makes them so uncomfortable, they ought to change the law so that we don't have to beg for permission from the government in order not to do it.

Just listened to the 911 tape - what a pomposity, "I've never seen that in my 57 years, blah blah Marine Corps, blah blah..." Unbelievable.

The internal investigation also needs to encompass the re-education of the dispatcher.

What re-education of the dispatcher? She did a bang up job in my book. She was getting as much information as she could for the officers and informed the caller that it was not illegal to openly carry a pistol. She informed the man that if he felt uncomfortable she would dispatch a car to the scene to ensure that the peace was not being disturbed and that everything was in order. If the officers had followed her example we wouldnt be talking about this now. She empathized with the caller and was reassuring to him.

I wasnt there to see how the police acted, but I dont think I would ever call a citizen an as*****n or retard in official e-mail. The press will have a field day with that if another incident ever happens with the officer. On my job I dont get paid to do it by what I feel but by the regulations and procedures in place.

Yessir, Eghad, the dispatcher is the heroine of this piece [of dreck].

She made one mistake about needing a permit to carry openly. In Virginia there is no such requirement. Otherwise, she got it right - empathetic, but clear (and accurate) that the incident our 57-year-old warrior Marine was describing involved no violations of law. Sounds like another Jersey import trying to re-make Virginia in New Jersey's image. :barf:

Go to www.vcdl.org and watch the videos of VCDL members taking it to the Manassas City Council.

So are the vids hidden in some special place on the VCDL website or are they painfully obvious and I'm just a doofus?

That couldn't have been said better. It's sad to see it happen all across VA. I have some good friends that are in Law Enforcement and they're pretty relaxed, but they're old school. I don't know what they're teaching them in the academy nowadays, but it seems too many of them are on a major power trip. Us against them attitude. How many of those officers were locals? Here in SE VA a lot of officers come from out of state which could possibly be part of the problem.l

Marine this and marine that... Nice to know that the dumbass who called 911 instantly knew the background of the gunowners even though he didn't know them.

I really love how someone exercising their rights makes other people nervous. Let the sh#@ hit the fan and the moron who called 911 will be looking for someone with a firearm for his safety.

It's a growing and disturbing trend that's for sure. I live in Central VA and I know many officers and not one of them has this mentality. In fact I'm going to the range with a few of them Sat. I agree with your statement and it seems to be the younger one who just don't get it. I wonder if some of them actually consider the oath they take about preserving and defending the Constitution.

I'm not from New Jersey but I live in Northern Virginia. I would prefer people not carry guns openly where I live and there's a lot of other things I would prefer people not do as well, while we're at it. I believe that people who openly carry guns do so with the intention of intimidating other people and in doing so, create a very negative image of gun owners, which may not be at all false.

Also, you do believe in free speech as well, don't you?

I can't wait to see the response to this. Let me go make some popcorn, 'cause this is gonna be a good show.

Do you also "prefer" people not exercising their right of free speech?
Do you also "prefer" people not exercising their right of free practice of religion?

What about people openly carrying guns alarms you?

Intimidation? Having lunch in a diner while armed?

What would be a positive image of gun owners in your mind? Locking the guns in the attic?

One last question... When car owners openly exhibit their custom automobiles does that present a bad image of car owners?

I agree with F350 in that sentiment. It will be a good show.
As for Blue Train, I do not think they are just doing it to intimidate, I think they might also do it for the "tacticool" factor. I open carried a few times before I got my permit only because I am not going to leave an unsecured firearm (a locked glovebox is unsecured to me) in a vehicle. I don't open carry any more because it eliminates the tactical factor of surprise. If I went to an ABC-on restaurant, I would open carry. Why should some scaredy cats rewrite Virginia law that, by the grace of God, has remained quite Libertarian for hundreds of years just because a bunch of Northern Libs come down here with their bad driving habits and horrible-sounding accents?
