Well, I goofed. I bought a p2000 9mm on Aug. 14. Then found a great deal on a Glock 20 and grabbed it. Little problem. Apparantly, in VA you can't buy more than one handgun. 30 day time limit.

Oopsie :D

Our one handgun a month law went into effect on July 1, 1993.

Get a carry permit. You know you need one anyway. :)

And there's always layaway.

I've heard about this rule but don't know anything about it. How is it controlled? Is there a national registry that keeps track of how many guns you buy?

Thats a pretty stupid law. I bet you some women voted that law in place after their husbands went on a gun shopping spree. We guys should try to pass a law making it illegal to buy more than more purse or one pair of shoes a month. I mean, after all, how many purses can you carry at one and how many pairs of shoes can you wear at once. I can carry at least 6 guns at one time! :D  :p

That's to keep criminals like you from buying (duh) more than one handgun in a month. That will eliminate crime. Oh, wait--you're not a criminal. Oh, wait--real criminals buy as many guns as they want, any time they want.

Well, supposedly at one time a lot of handguns purchased in Virginia ended up in other states, so they decided to pass a law.

It's not that hard to plan ahead, or just pay for it and let the dealer hold it until you can take delivery. Actually, once I started buying $1k handguns the law stopped being a problem.

dolanp: Obviously, I know what you are suggesting; however, I respectfully suggest word "enlightened" might be far preferable to "lax"!

Hehe, true enough. I guess I look at "lax" as a positive term in relation to firearms laws! :)

"How is it controlled? Is there a national registry that keeps track of how many guns you buy?"

The background checks in VA are done by the State Police. They keep track of it.

The one handgun a month provision applies to dealer and private purchases. The private purchases are on the honor system.

:D :D :D
I'll honor it as much as they honor the constitution.

Got to love loopholes.

You see a gun law approved in California, go ahead and laugh, but laugh quickly, cause it spreads. They start here and spread like the plague, first a few places, then shortly thereafter the entire country. One gun a month is stupidity at its purest!
