Only one caliber?

Caliber or Cartridge?

If caliber, 0.30 caliber. Covers pretty much all medium-bore cartridge.
If cartridge, 0.308 Win ftw. :-)

I would have to say a 357 mag or a 44 mag both can be fired from a rifle or pistol.

Just my 5 and 1/2 cents.

So far, we have 22 votes for CARTRIDGES, and 2.5 votes for calibers.

If there was only one caliber, it would be .29. ...Because I am going to corner the market with .295" barrels, and bullets. ;) And it's just far enough from useful swaging size, to make bullet casters buy my molds, too. :D

I'm assuming the OP meant cartridge, but regardless...
Though a .270 shooter through 'n through, for the OP's criteria (though I didn't see and am ignoring pistol), I'll have to agree with a short action round (but not a WSM) and the .30 caliber/.308 cartridge folks. IF, current stocks/ordnance/logistics considerations, were not a factor and one could specify from scratch, I might +1 a7mmnut's 7mm-08. I think, militarily, an M1A/M14 in '08 would be the cat's meow. It's all that platform needs. The .308 still beats the '08 in ultimate versatility, especially if you include the likes of elk and bear in the equation--which a "do all" cartridge should accommodate. Throw elk and bear out, and it's back to the 7mm for me.

Standard action? .270 of course :) But the OP didn't specify it had to be, so the "one" all around? - it's back to the short action and the .308, and I don't even own one.

I would also go with .30 Caliber or as some put it .308 bore diameter.
My Choice for an all around Cartridge for North America would be .308 Winchester. I chose the .308 winchester round because its leinght makes it usable for a number of diferent actions and fireams designs, not to mention the .308 winchester is not so picky about barrel leinght as some cartridges.
I read an article in Rifle Shooter Magazine about the Ruger Scout Rifle, and with its 16.5 barrel some cartridges were achieving over 2600 FPS, and some loads were 2400 FPS.
Put the Same Cartridge in a 24" barrel and you can achieve over 2800 FPS.
it is a very good verstitle cartridge I think.
Forgive my Poor spelling, I will never make an English Teacher:)

Well I'm not gonna play this caliber vs cartridge, AD vs. ND, clip vs. magazine, or the "a revolver isn't a pistol" game. Just petty....

For my needs we're talking either a .243 or .260. Maybe throw in the 6.5 Swede, the 6.5 creedmore, the .250 Savage or a .257 bob. Because of population I need a caliber (Sorry, CARTRIDGE!) that has available very fragile varmint bullets as to keep ricochetes to a minimum but also has good, quality game bullets for larger game. I also need a good amount of range and accuracy.

Any of the above listed rounds will do everything I need and then some. Don't need bigger and smaller won't do everything I need. As for the police aspect of the OP's question I have no input except to say that any of the rounds are more than big enough and accurate enough for law enforcment work at any level.

BTW, if it wasn't for population, predators and varmints the 7mm-08 is prehaps the best choice. Just not for me in my area.

The 30:06. Over 40 years experience. Have had lots of other calibers, and they are good, but the ole ought six can do every thing from varmints, informal target, to Moose.

If your not a handloader, you'd be better served with something elese.

One Caliber: .30 Considering what the bullet is capable of in a shoulder fired rifle combined with what is capable of a .357/.327 magnums in a handgun, I am certain we could manage to create a very adequate handgun to fire a high-velocity .30-based cartridge.

One Cartridge: It had better be a big handgun cartridge if it must do the job of a rifle. So how about 500 S&W? Lightweight people would have to reduce the powder and bullet weight and shoot with two hands to manage, but we would find a way!

Over the years, my herd has simplified down to 2 calibers... The 308 Winchester and a couple of reliable .22 long rifles. There has been no need for anything else and since cleaning out the safe, i get to look at the autos and bolts before I grab one for the critters or the range.

That said, only one caliber for everything... 308.
