One Species

There are many threads and polls here asking about what we enjoy hunting. It seems that most of the members here have several species they pursue.

There are also many threads asking folks about the one gun they would have if they were limited to one. I enjoy reading the posts on these topics.

I decided to combine the two. What if for some reason you were limited to hunting for one species this year? What would you hunt for? In other words, if you had to give up all hunting expect for one, this would be it? I am not talking about going hunting just once, but hunting just one type of game animal. The hunting would allow the bag limit and last as long as the legal season does.

Hogs, you can hunt them all year long and some people will PAY!

Gut'em, throw a bag of ice in the hole and get'em to a cooler. The local Hispanics will pay $1.25 a lb. under 100 lbs. and $1 for anything over.

Hunt AND get paid. Does it get any better?

Tough call.

I really enjoy the Pronghorn Antelope hunt. However, it's not much of a 'hunt'. It's more like a treasure hunt:
1. Find antelope from 1000-3000 yards away.
2. Attempt to close the gap to 600 or less with a vehicle.
3. Attempt to close the gap further, on foot. (This usually results in returning to the vehicle, and starting over at step 1.)
4. Tag and Bag
5. Return home the same day.

The real hunt is our Elk hunt. Tons of fun, lots of effort and real hunting skill required, and quite a payoff. However, the last few years have given us some deplorable weather... weather so bad the Elk were impossible to track down.

Antelope hunt.... Tee shirt and jeans....
Elk hunt.... freezing rain, and wet clothes....

Tough call.

I'd spend the whole month of September sneaking around the elk woods squeaking and bugling for cows and bulls, trying to get any of them close enough to stick an arrow in. We already do it for two weeks, and the only thing that would be better would be another couple of weeks.:) jd

One species

That is a tough one. But, it would have to be Mule deer. I have never enjoyed any hunting so much. I think it is the type of terrain they inhabit. Big high bluff's, with sage everywhere. Juniper's, and pine tree's in the mix. Not knowing after an all morning hike, if there will be a big buck just over the rise. Looking across a big open sage valley, and seeing a big buck looking up at you. Now you got me going. Mule deer!!!

Coues deer.

I could hunt them here in Arizona, again in New Mexico, and...er...no; I'm not going south of the border this year. To much trouble down there.

Arizona and New Mexico would have to do; they're they only states in the US where they're found.

Me too! My favorite hunting by far, as a matter of fact, some of the guys and I will be going out tonight to the favorite nocturnal habitat of the whitetail to search them out. We practice more of a "catch and release" type of hunting though.

I almost reflexively said deer. But I was thinking a while back that I haven't been goose hunting in at least ten years. Washington has a bunch of geese to shoot at. We have a four a day bag limit for Canadian honkers and they taste pretty darn good.
So if it was just for one year then geese it is.

Archery hunting elk.......Just nothing like watching from a high area as they work their way up on an early foggy morning, Love the dead silence of no cars, phones or other people, with the only noise of cow chatter and the bugle of the big nasty in control of the herd in September. Their is no question in my mind this will make me live longer. :D

Hogs if we had more around.
Same with rabbit.
So I'm going with squirrel. Long season, multiple methods and they're tasty little treats.

Tough call........it would either be coon or coyotes. Coon are easier and numbers are there, coyote are more of a chalenge and are open all year. But truth be known, go ahead and limit me to one species. Ya see, I cheat!! :D

1) only animal I could hunt BEAR! and if you limited me to 1 species black bear. (cause I only have to drive 30mins away till im in the bush with black bear country)
