one revolver to rule them all...

Get what you want to get, but may I suggest that for just coolness factor, and fun to shoot factor, it is hard to bear a Ruger Vaquero in 357 mag, OR for cool and fun on a budget a Single Six with both the .22 LR and .22 mag cylinders. All sorts of fun, and you save $$$ on ammo because they take longer to load:D

S&W 327 R8. Can't go wrong with an 8-shot 357 Mag. At a distant 2nd, the Taurus (yes, Taurus . . .) 608 w/4 inch barrel. Again, can't go wrong with an 8-shot 357 Mag.

I'm a 45 guy so I bought a Ruger New Blackhawk 45ACP/45 Colt convertible. It's a great shooting gun and uses both 45s that I like. I shot 45 Colt for 8 years doing Cowboy action shooting. 45ACP is what I carry in my EDC 1911s.

Fun to play this game. But nobody can tell you which gun will make you happy. Fact is that just about any well made revolver from any manufacturer can be fun to shoot. I confess to a bias towards Colts and S&Ws. Um...a 44 Magnum for first revolver? I don't think so. The 38 Special is perfect for fun shooting and would be my first choice. With that said...

The classic 38 revolver. The good old Military & Police/Model 10.

The adjustable sight version is the Model 15.Combat Masterpiece.

Colts are off the charts price wise but the Official Police Model can still be found at something resembling affordable.

The Trooper (pre Mark III) can be found in 357 and 38 calibers,

"No body has just one revolver."

Actually NOT true...

Most people add guns ONE at a time...

So when you add the first ONE, it is just ONE...:D

T.

I started with one. But it could just as easily been two being purchased on the same day... hmmmm.

For me.... at first there was one... long pause; then there were two, shorter pause; then there were three, four, five, six and so forth. It wasn't until I started hitting gun shows in the late 80's and 90's, that more than one firearm would appear on the same day. I think my purchase record was something like 5 firearms in one day back in the day. That buying behavior was ceased.

22's is where I started, and probably where I'll finish.

For years I have thought of the one gun question and the answer has changed a number of times. Currently I would have to go with a 38sp, probably a S&W model 15. The other choice would be a Ruger Single Six with both cylinders. At almost 70 years old I no longer have any interest in magnums, I have arthritic hand because of them. The J frame air weight are not fun to shoot in 38 and the hard recoiling guns I used to shoot (308, 7mm08, 45-70 etc hand guns) now heart my hands.

20 yeas ago I thought that recoil did not bother me, now I know differently. For hand guns the 1911 45, 38sp revolver and some hammer fired double stack autos are still shoot-able with out pain. Now the 38 sp is my favorite revolver, along with a 22lr. :D

Brando, as so many others have posted, there is no such thing as a perfect anything, much less the perfect revolver. There are just too many options for different carry needs. That being said, if I was limited to one revolver it would be a Smith and Wesson Model 19/66 with a 2 1/2"barrel. These are small and light enough to carry but have enough heft that they feel like I've got a real firearm in my hand, unlike my J frames.

Sorry I missed the " can only have one" aspect of the op's question, probably because I can't fathom such a thing , given that caveat I will change my answer to a 4" stainless Python Elite. Might as well go to the poor house on the basis of I can have only one.

depends...

If it's the one revolver if you can only have one (centerfire), easy!: 4" DA .357/.38 (either L frame Smith or Ruger)

Now, if it's the ONE revolver to rule them all, in the spirit of The One Ring, it must be powerful, sexy, and valuable. It must set itself apart from all other revolvers in these ways:

It would be a richly blued Smith 629 .44 mag with a 5" barrel and no internal lock. The trigger would be finely tuned and it would be sighted by a competent gunsmith. It would come with presentation grips. That would be MY one ring, er, revolver.

I got mine!
A 1982 model,
.357 mag,
Stainless Security Six,
with a six inch barrel.
Got this about four years ago for the princely sum of $350 bucks.
Seem to be little used and locked up tight as a drum!:D

For the purpose of this thread, a Dan Wesson .357 with barrel kit. If it's the only one, I might want some options down the line.

For my purposes,

A 1982 model,
.357 mag,
Stainless Security Six,
with a six inch barrel.

is about right. Stainless, medium frame, 6" barrel, durable, affordable.

If I could ONLY have one it would be my Smith & Wesson 686. Easy to shoot, accurate, light enough to carry, though I don't. Fairly rust resistant. Easy to re-load for. And, six rounds ought to be enough.

Man!! this is a hard one.

I have five Colt DA'S and eleven Smith & Wesson's, and I love them all, but I guess if I could keep only one, it would be the S&W 3 1/2" Model 27-2.

It's accurate, and can digest 357's with no problem, and a sweetheart with 38's, and it's easy to carry OWB on my hip.

Smith & Wesson 28-2 Highway patrolman. Shoot 38 special for fun at the range and 357 for serious work. 6 inch barrel for range work. Awesome S & W trigger! Must say I shot a friends new Ruger GP100 Match Champion and it had a very smooth double action trigger, especially for a new Ruger!
