for those of you who live in indiana i am new to the whole personal protection permit thing and i was wondering if you could carry a second back-up gun with a personal protection permit?

quick call to the county would answer for sure but have never heard of a shall issue state that had a limit on the quantity you can carry

well...

I've lived (and carried) in Indiana for several years and have looked over Indiana code and I don't recall ever seeing anything that would restrict the number of weapons that a person is allowed to carry. Open carry is allowed as well, though few people do.

In California it's one, and it has to be the one you specified on your CCW. I have been told you can use another "if" you can prove you weapon is checked in with a gunsmith for repair, or shipped to the manufacturer; but I would not trust that unless I had it in writing from the PD. It took me almost a year to get my CCW, and when I wanted to change pistols it took a month to get it authorized.

"But Officer,I have a concealed carry permit...."

All I can say is "Why"?

It's just plain dumb to carry more than one.

Why is it dumb? We don't know what he is carrying, we don't know where he lives or what he does for a living or what he has to face in his daily routine.

I would be happy with one of my revolvers or my 45 with just 5 rounds in either but I know my capabilities and I don't live in an area where its likely that I will ever be in a shootout. On the other hand when I worked and lived where I did in Illinois for 10 years 2 guns with 17 rounds in each gun and a sawed off shotgun in my tool bag would have been comforting.

It's dumb because unless you're a cop or a soldier, or maybe an armed bodyguard, there's no legitimate reason to carry more than one gun.

We carry concealed for our personal protection, and the protection of our loved ones that are with us. We don't need an arsenal strapped to our bodies to provide that protection.

What are the chances of actually having to shoot a weapon at someone? Extremely slim.

What are the chances that your gun will break at any particular time? Extremely slim.

So, combine these. What are the chances that you'll need your gun and it will fail at exactly the wrong time? If you take care of your gun, and are proficient with it, this will be so rare as to be nearly impossible.

Think about it... How many police officers carry multiple handguns? Two of my best friends are cops. I've asked both of them. Neither of them know any fellow cops that carry two guns.

Now, if cops don't typically do it, and they use their firearms all the time, then why should you? Chances are, you'll never need to use your gun anyway, in your entire life.

Something else to think about: The worst case happens, and you draw your firearm and shoot the bad guy. You will be questioned, and you will likely face a grand jury to decide whether or not you should be prosecuted. Simply being someone who carries a gun will be bad enough for many of the anti-gun people that will sit on that jury. If they find out you are carrying multiple guns, a knife, and so forth, many will think you a nut, and will be more likely to run you through the legal system. This will be expensive for you, and could turn out very bad.

I believe that people carry two guns, not because they need them, but because it makes them feel cool and tough. Now, it's up to you to decide whether to do it or not. I won't tell you you're wrong for doing it. However, I think it's dumb...

Select your carry gun with care. Keep it clean, lubricated, and well-maintained. Be proficient with it. If you live in a more dangerous area, then carry some extra ammo.

Do you have any thoughts on how many rounds I should "legitimately" be able to carry?

How about how many horsepower my car has? Mine has 385. I don't "need" that much to get from point A to point B...does that make me "dumb"??

Everyone's situation is different. Tough to make such a blanket statement.

Do you carry? Doesn't sound like you "need" to, at least not "legitimately".

I know several who do carry two, including one who just graduated from the academy where they teach them to carry a backup.

Masaad Ayoob recomends carrying two on different sides in case you get shot on one arm and can't draw your weapon from that side.

I don't usually carry two guns either but to call it dumb that anyone else would is well, dumb.

I've carried two pistols lots of times - if I'm on a long trip, I like to keep a snubby on my ankle in addition to the 1911 inside my waistband. Or, I'll keep a snubby in my coat if it's cold and I expect to be outside very long.

Anyone who questions what is "legitimate" in this regard is the one whose judgment and motives should be questioned, not those who legally carry more than one firearm.

New Mexico is a "shall issue" state and considered gun-friendly. But a concealed carry permit allows the carrier one gun only. But that should be sufficient. I never carry more than one, and here in Texas we can carry an arsenal if we can keep it concealed.

Carry as many as you comfortably can and feel that you need. I don't care how much gas you put in your car, either, but would think it was pretty dumb to tow a spare around in case the first broke! ;)

Why should I care about that? Carrying a spare engine would be pretty silly, though.

I carry quite often. And I carry legitimately. My opinion, though, is that it doesn't make sense to carry more than one. Like I said earlier, carry one reliable, well-maintained gun. Train with it, and be good with it. Carry as much ammo as you feel you need.
