I would NOT take a revolver. You get a little sand on the inside of a revolver, and it'll lock up... but you can wipe off a slide in a semi-auto. I understand the internals better in an auto-loader plus it holds more rounds... but that's just me, and I hope the end isn't near.

Though I've only two 44 magnums (a DA 4" S&W 629 and a SA 10 1/2" Ruger SBH), I too would vote for a long-barrel, double-action, 44 magnum. For hunting large game, any handgun is marginal - even the .44 magnum. Thus my preferance for the longest barrel in the largest caliber. As to the pros & cons of a Redhawk vs a Super Redhawk - other than the scope option on the latter, I need to look over the archives here. I'll say this much though, a 9 1/2" SRH is a very substantial chunk of iron!(so is my long SBH) http://www.ruger-firearms.com/rvpages/ksrh9.html
My second choice would be at least a 6" DA .357 magnum. The option to use .38 spl is very nice. Call me old-fashioned, but I do like blued steel. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/rvpages/gp161.html
SA = Single Action
DA = Double Action
S&W = Sellout & Whore
SBH = Super BlackHawk
Like FUD, I would want an automatic for civilized areas (probably my Glock 22) and a revolver for desolate areas (probably my S&W 586 with 8 3/8" barrel). The end of the world has to be near when you get persecuted for flying old glory....
