One gun or Two

When I was a cop, I carried a 1911 left side, a S&W .38 right side, a .38 derringer left back pocket, a sap, sap gloves and a yawara stick. Now I don't carry all the time, but when I do its a .38 derringer. Less firepower but a lot lighter.;)

Two carried most of the time.

When carried differently I can get to one when the other is hard to get too.

I carry reloads because magazines fail and I am not going to expect to run off statistics and wait for the police without reloading my firearm.

If you wind up in a scuffle and your firearm gets jammed in the dirt what are you going to do?

I will be pulling my backup.

I don't care what others do.

Just carrying a firearm puts you ahead of most folks.

I just know for a fact that things can happen to cause a problem with a firearm and I don't want to wind up in the news being the schmuck who had a gun at a gunfight but had a problem with the gun.

I would still carry a backup firearm even if I carried something like a glock 17 with 17 + 1 rounds on tap.

Before I was an LEO I carried two guns out of habit.

I have seen situations, or talked with those it has happened to, where the Primary has failed, Primary arm has been wounded, Primary Gun has been taken away as well as needing to arm a third party.

My Agency allows me to carry whatever I want off-duty, as long as it's not full-auto. I carry an N-Frame Revolver as a Primary with a reload and a J-Frame and a reload as a BUG.

If you learn how to "dress around the gun" it's not that difficult. By the way, it's over 100 degrees here today and I have two guns on and I'm outside a good bit.

I ALWAYS have a KeltecP3AT in my back pocket. That way I am NEVER without a gun. It is smaller than my wallet. I always have a 1911 in a BOB (bail out bag) near me (in vehicle, at work, etc). I put the 1911 in my IWB on my hip in any suspect or vulnerable circumtance.

Just 2?

When I worked patrol, in the winter and could wear a jacket most of the time, i wore three: main duty gun, a Browning 13 shot .380 in a shoulder holster, and a .38 5 shot in an ankle holster. A guy once asked why I carried three, I told him I just didnt have room for 4!.

Many people have mentioned only carry two guns if you only have one gun and one magazine, but what good is another magazine if you don't have the gun to fire it with? (Using an example) what if you have your kid on the left arm and you pull out your gun with the right, you fire off one shot, and it stove-pipes. You aren't going to drop your kid to clear it. It's much better to drop that gun and pull up another one. Then if that fails you have very bad luck.... then grab the first gun, run like hell, and clear it with your teeth :)

One loaded Gun, and 2 8rdr mags. That is more than enough. If you are a SWAT then load as much a you can, you might need it, you just don't know the situation arises.
