One gun for two purposes?

Myself, I prefer a revolver for its least likelihood of jamming when you most need it, and the fact that statistically, you're likely going to confront a solitary criminal, so 6 rounds should suffice. Are most of you here prefer a semi auto because you anticipate a prolong gun battle, or that you'll miss the first few shots ?? Or do you anticipate confronting a group of hard-core gang bangers ??
Myself, unless the assailant or intruder is armed, and about to fire, I plan not to shoot until my target has closed to 15 or 20 feet.

Not at all, atleast in my case. I am a big fan of revolvers and of auto's; have have both types in guns small enough for concealed carry or larger for full-sized guns.

When it comes to my choice of an auto over a revolver it is quite simply because I can shoot it better. I have a Glock 36, which is a 6 round .45acp sub-compact (incase anyone is unfamiliar). As much as I prefer to carry one of my 5-shot wheelies, I just can't shoot them nearly as well as my 36. I can keep all 5 shots of .357 in the COM, but I can put all 6 rounds of 45 through an expanding hole very quickly. My larger revolvers I can do very well with, but I usually just count on my carry firearm for any home defense needs, and I am not inclined to lug an N-frame around all day, everyday.

As for capacity or speed of reload, I am confident that 5 or 6 shots will do the job. I'm not out for prolonged shoot outs, just enough to get my ass out of trouble.

To answer your questions, "No"..."No"...,and "No". Honestly, although I don't "expect" the scenarios you mention above, but I also see no reason to limit my ammo capacity based on my "expectations", or should I say, lack thereof. My G17 was designed to hold 17 rounds. If someone thinks this is "overkill", then I have a feeling that might have a bit in common with the "anti's" who like to ask, "why do you need a magazine that holds 17 rounds?" I like revolvers just fine, but I did make a conscious decision that I wanted more than 5, or 6 rounds in my HD handgun.

The recommended strategy is to first convince your wife that these two purposes REQUIRE separate firearms, then use that same argument to convince her you MUST buy another one!

+1, that is my strategy also (except the two purposes doesn't quite cover it, more like 6 different reasons), plz don't let her know :D

Using the same gun (or two guns with identical manuals of arms, trigger pulls, sight pictures, and grip shape) is better than using two different guns.

Agreed. All of my carry guns (with the exception of my BUG) are 5" 1911's, all set up identically, and all of our dedicated house guns are Smith K frames for simplicity in manual of arms.

Who the heck would think that a gun good enough for SD is somehow bad for HD? Come on now. Have other guns because you want them (great idea!!!!)but your carry piece is just as good when you get home as it is at the mall.
