One all-purpose gun...

If it has to be just one handgun for everything, it has to be a 357 Magnum.

Now, many folks said that... Why exactly does it have to be a 357 Magnum? Why not some good 9mm SIG, or compact 1911?

Sign me up as an anti-lug person. Quickest way to turn a handy, quick well balanced gun into a clunk. Personally I always liked the old Ruger Service Six .357s with the light barrel--I think they weighed in around 33 oz. Even with good grips they recoiled, but was a quick gun to work with. When I had mine rebarrelled they hung a heavier (larger diameter) barrel on it, much to my dismay.

Same with the old Model 10 S&W--the weight is all forward. And if you hit someone with it you will probably still bend the frame anyway...

Let me address the "Why does it have to be a .357 Magnum (specifically a 4" stainless GP100)?"

Because: 1) My 4" stainless GP100(s) (to be used as the 'reference gun' for this entire post) handles bullets, with weights from 95g to 200g, of lead, jacketed, rubber, and plastic. 2) It handles two calibers, 38 Special and .357 Magnum. 3) Proven defense capabilities in a recoil-controllable platform; 110g JHP's to 125g JHP's. 4) Animal defense capabilities, given correct loads, up to bear (no, not best, but capable). 5) Ammo is ubiquitous. 6) As of this moment, ALL GP100's I have owned, tested, made ammo for, or read about, have given fantastic accuracy with at least one load (I mean totally completely unbelievable accuracy!). 7) Inexpensive in all ways; purchase, ammo, service, aftermarket custom parts, etc. 8) Low maintenance.

My personal GP's wear Pachmayr Decelerator grips, and high-visibility Millett orange-ramp front sights. Both have delivered 4" groups at 100 yards. Both can send my 180g JHP hunting load out the barrel at 1160fps +. They can both spit 125g's at 1500fps +.

Manual of arms is easiest with wheels, as is securing safely.

Plus, I like the way they look....

Questions?

"All my ammo is factory ammo"

If I was limited to only one pistol it would be a S&W model 19 with a 4" bbl (pre-sell out, of course). Why not a 9mm? Well, we never had to double tap until the 9mm became popular!

My "all-purpose" handgun is my S&W 27-2 with 6" barrel. Put me down as one who also dislikes the underlug guns. The N frame Smiths actually weigh slightly less than their L frame counterparts and have the extra beef where it counts----- in the cylinder. This revolver will handle everything from .38 wadcutters to the heaviest of .357 handloads well. It is by far the most accurate handgun I've owned and I've been shooting revolvers for 35 yrs. Amazingly you can still find the fine revolvers for a relatively modest price. Better get one before they all dry up. You won't be sorry. regards, birdman

Everybody talks about M-19, can you buy on of those in new condition from the box? I just have that thing about my only gun being brand new - maybe it is an odd thing but anyways... :)

407K bytes on this one. Time for part 2.

B-Fox - do you realize that everytime you add the fancy graphic as a signature it costs over 100K bytes in load time? I think once per thread should be enough.
