On the way to work... (what would you do?)

John,

Sounds like you did the right thing. I'd rather intervene and call the cops. We all have to explain what is happening. Worse case I make a mistake and feel like a fool for a while. If no one does anything, worse case someone dies.

Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower

For all you "Save The Day" Saviors out there, I guess you have a lot more money than I do and a lawyer on retainer that you like paying.

I like to keep my money for me and mine, so the most I will do for anyone is intervene on MY TERMS WHEN I CHOOSE TO. I don't know the players in this situation and what has happened. Therefore I would call 911 and be a good witness.

By the way, I am an LEO and have BTDT in regards to a similar scenario off-duty. Since I cannot recall a bullet once it's been fired from my gun, and real life doesn't allow "Do Overs" I will use every bit of restraint and caution that I can, but I WILL GO HOME SAFELY.

The rest of you can do whatever you want, I will go home and sleep fine.

Biker-

A law enforcment officer with a 'save my own ass first' attitude. GREAT. You don't have the 'compelled to intervene in the protection and service of the public' oath dragging you into danger eh.

I HOPE your not actually a law enforcment officer, but if you actually are, then I hope your department has a extra COP to make up the difference.

Just me but that didn't seem like what the man was saying, Bruxley. In uniform, and in the patrol car response is gonna be different.

Me? I'd maintain a safe distance and call 911. I can assist them as needed. However you do no one any good, including a potential victim if you run up and get shot, and the BG gets away.

*Disclaimer- this philosphy does not apply if you are in fact, Superman, Neo, or a ninja.*

I an too old, past 66 and bad arthritis and my CCW has not yet arrived in the mail.
3 days ago, I was entering a Walmart, a black from Dallas had parked in the fire lane , blocking the pedestrian crosswalk, an old black told him he should get out of the way, the Dallas black got really nasty, threatened the old man with serious bodily harm and started to open the car door, I was at the door, I yelled as loud as I could to the store staff to get the store security, NOW.
I then told the Dallas black he had already committed 2 misdemeanors and was working on a felony, he really should get back in his car and leave before the cops got there.
He sputtered a bit about an old honky, then asked, "You the man?", I then told him, no, I was retired, he then closed the door and left, fast.
May not have been the best thing to do, but I was not going to stand there and watch him commit battery on another old man.
Basically, I just faked him out, although my 4" lockblade was in my hand in my pocket.:D

Good work John. I too would call 911 and report from a distance. If they took off I would probably follow and stay on the line with 911. I would not directly confront them since it is anybody's game in a domestic.

If when all was said and done I got to work late then I would just explain what happenned. If my boss could not accept the reason given he is a real tool and I should have already been looking for another job.
