Old v New gun carry

A new gun can be replaced in one day.

True.

But then again, they don't make guns like my 1965 S&W Model 15-2 in 38 Special or 1985 Ruger Police Service Six in 357 Mag anymore. I carry guns like this because I shoot them best. Plain and simple. So personally, I don't feel like I'm giving up anything to newer guns.

Nice to see that many like the older firearms, as I do. Do I think 25 years ago is old, not really. When I stated older than 85, I did not mean that anything around 1985 was old. I consider myself young, so if I thought that 1985 was old, that would make me old. I have been 39 for over twenty years now. Anyway love to see some of the replies here. I have to say some brought up a good points about loosing you prized gun because of an incident. I can tell you I don't own anything close to a ten thousand dollar gun, but I do own some brand new guns in the over thousand range. Old or new it doesn't matter to me. If I loose it to an investigation I have more important issues to worry about. Most likely that firearm would returned to me if aquitted. If not, "well" I think you know what that would mean.

When I carry a full size gun, it's either a Python from the 90's (recent purchase and the newest I own by a LOT of years) or my old favorite 1926 Army Special.

For pocket carry, it's a 1974 Cobra.

I shoot the Army Special as well as anything.

Hell, most of what I own are "old" guns. :D

A lot of times I'll carry a S&W 3914NL (1991) but when weather permits, I'll carry it's larger brother...

S&W 39-2, circa 1971.

Sometimes I'll carry one of these Model 15's when I'm in the mood for a six-shooter.

I have a Colt Police positive Special.

It gives me confidence that my 45 just does not have.

I know what the Colt will do. It feels like an extension of me.

Others are mechanical contraptions that tend to have a glitch
every now and then.

Priorities

I wouldn't make what can easily be replaced the main priority for my choice of carry gun. If you do, carry a Jennings!

As to a replacement, if my gun ever gets taken (temporarily as evidence), it will be replaced, with something, as soon as I get home. Thats one good reason to have more than one pistol of the type you carry.

Older? pre-85? Usually. A 1980 Browning BDA .45 has been my usual choice since I got it, in 1980. And while I don't have an exact replacement, getting another Sig P220 .45 isn't that difficult.

And I have other pieces to tide me over until that can happen.

Heck, I've carried a .44-40 1873 single action colt type revolver, an original 1917 S&W .45acp, an old S&W M&P .38, .45acp 1911A1 copy, Walther PP .32 auto, Walther P-38 9mm and my Glock C17 9mm. They all work and I've never felt under gunned. The point is being able to use the gun you carry not what kind or how old it is. My $0.02.

Any younger folks like the older guns better?

I like old hunting guns better. My dove gun is a 30 ish year old Browning Citori, and my rifle is also about that old.

BUT... I must say I like the new handgun designs and tactical rifles better for defense. ;)

And I love new scopes.

I am one of those younger folks but I alternate carry between one new gun and one old gun, even though the newer one is more dinged up than the older one.

The "new" one is a Beretta 92G that has been through it paces time and time again.

The "old" one is a Ruger Security Six from 1980 that I bought NIB in 2008.:D

As a matter of fact, the last few days I have been carrying my 1963 E. German Makarov. A few different threads about the Mak made me remember how nice it is to carry.

For carry, I consider reliability, accuracy, wear resistance (harsh conditions, weather, etc.) and carry ability. Which usually translates to a G26/27 and or a S&W 642.

All my guns are shooters but I won't carry guns that are expensive and or hard to replace when I have others as described above that work just as well or better and can be repalced tomorrow if I have to.

I'll never understand why someone would use their grandfathers WWII 1911 or beautiful Model 27 3 1/2 inch for self defence when a modern 1911 or Model 686 will do the job just as well and you won't give a **** if it sits in an evidence room for months or may never be returned, unless of course they are the only firearms available to you.

The oldest guns I've carried were a Smith & Wesson M&P .38 made around 1920, a Regulation Police made around the same time, and a Polish Radom 9mm made under Nazi occupation around 1943-44.
