Okay, Talk Me Out Of It. I Decided Not To Buy An AR-15

Accuracy, ease of disassembly/assembly, spare parts availability, versatility (can you turn your Mini from a match rifle to a light carbine by popping two pins?) ease of mounting a scope, and MOST importantly, most aftermarket hicap mags for the mini 14 suck and factory mags are astronomical. M16 mags are cheap and readily available.

Uncle

Okay you talked me into it. I too have a call into my dealer when he gets an AR-180B. After I look at that weapon, I think I will make my choice. But something tells me that one day for sure, I will have an AR. But I will always keep my Mini.

Curious from the group. If I do buy the AR it will be a flat top, but what about barrel length. I was thinking about the 16 inch dissapator, but should I be thinking about the 20 inch? Is the extra 4 inches worth it in the accuracy department? I am not a competition shooter. Just shoot for fun and home defense.

Thanks for the fun thread!

If you're not going for competition, the 16" is fine. My SP1 is 16" and my friends newer generation AR is a 20"HB. We notice no difference in accuracy up to 200yds.

If you plan on layin down some lead (I know I've been known to occasionally empty a few 30-rounders as fast as my finger would let me), go for the heavy barrel.

Edward429251:

How do you plan on "picking one up"? Maybe you should try "picking up" a pen and writing your congressman, or writing more checks to the NRA, or voting, etc, etc, before resorting to the tough talk. There are better ways to effect change than what your eluding to. If you already are doing what I mentioned, then keep it up, because it does help.

I get sick of this damn militia crap I read on this bored. I think this will be my last visit here. Myself and several other members of TFL are a part of the US Military. We take offense when we hear the people we swore to defend with our lives advocating violence towards us. This bored is really starting to hurt my morale. Serving the people of this country is hardly worth it anymore.

I dont think most of you realize how it feels. "Thanks" for the support you give us.

Riggs man, relax. Unless you're talking about some other post he may have made on some other thread, I get the impression Ed was only talking about the way gun banning has been going on. You know, he wants to "pick one up" before the politicians figure out how to completely ban them.

Please don't get the impression that TFLers are going against you boys. Nothing could be farther from the truth (except for a couple wackos that will hopefully no longer have time for this board once school gets going, if you know what I mean). Most deflamatory comments on this board against "the man" relate to the ATF personnel that love to take property that doesn't belong to them or law enforcement personnel that treat their job like we're all at war with them.
I've found that most military personnel on this board are on our side, and we feel that we can count on them if, indeed, the **** really did hit the fan.

We're proud to have you guys on our side, please don't let a few idiots ruin that.;)

Not having an AR-15 is un-American.

One should sit in your safe next to your Garand, M14/M1A, and M-1 carbine.

Besides, your state may just end up not allowing you to ever own one -like in California.

JRiggs:

I saw no violence advocated, but rather, chagrin at the political direction our country is meandering. You, of course, would never be in danger- no matter how unconstitutional any directives you were given- because you would refuse to follow illegal orders, right?

It does not matter how good a man you are, nor how honorable a soldier you are; to deny there are those who would follow any order is to deny reality, the reality that has seen tens of millions of unarmed people killed by their governments in this century.

I am happy that you have been on this board, Riggs. If it's any consolation, I promise to do my best to smite anyone who attempts to apply force to me, REGARDLESS OF THEIR PARENTAGE OR THE UNIFORM THEY WEAR. No discrimination is offered, so I hope you will rethink your choice, as I am certain my viewpoint is not unique, here. You're not being picked on.

To the thread originator: if I was not clear originally, let me be so now. If you do not have a capable autoloading rifle, by all means, get one that fits your budget and ideals. Practice with it. It's your duty. If you can have fun, share quality time with your family, and commune with friends at the same time, so much the better.

JRiggs, I'm not advocating violence and I'm not picking on anyone, especially not someone who knows that they took an oath and is not scared to admit it.

Actually, What I had in my head was maybe I do have a good reason to go buy an AR for myself even if I do already have 3 Mini's AND an M1A. I been talking myself out of it cause I have 3 rifles that do the same thing, and were cheaper. I was nice and happy in my AR-less Mini-lifestyle and here come all you guys making a damn good case to go get one anyway!

They are auful easy to break down and clean. And the mags ARE cheaper, it would hold its value, parts are everywhere for them, and on and on. If I can explain the investment value of the purchase to my better half, she'll let me buy one!

The allusion to violence in defense of "We the Peoples" constitution, I make no apoligies for. That was the joke you know, it could be read either way. Ha-Ha. I stand in defense of my country and the ideals it was founded on, and would give my life in its defense against all enemies forign or domestic. I dont want it to be this way, but its a reality I have to deal with. The fact that you seen the allusion means that you're reasonably intelligent, and have been paying attention. Well, me too.

You speak of defending the US, and its people, and of the constitution. Thats all I speak of. I dont advocate violence, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt ever be forced to use it. We're on the same side. You're out there defending MY country? Thank you very much, kind sir. But be advised, you got backup here in the people and in my home if need be, just in case your government ever lets YOU down or turns its back on you.

I vote for the best, but prepare for the worst. It seems prudent.

I'm a bolt gun guy. My hunting rifles shoot 1.5" groups with good hunting ammo. My "punch paper" guns shoot sub-MOA with match ammo. I bought a Mini, I shot the Mini, I sold the Mini. For me, 4" groups at 100 yards just don't cut it. Bought an AR.

The AR-180B uses standard AR-15/M16 magazines. For info check out www.armalite.com .

Price is nice compared to the AR-15 and, IMHO, the AR-18/180 is what the AR-15/M16 should have been. Reliable and accurate, yet simple, easy to maintain, cheap, and easy to manufacture.

That's odd, since every AR15 I've owned (and M16 I carried) was reliable, accurate and easy to maintain. They aren't that expensive either.
