Okay, Talk Me Out Of It. I Decided Not To Buy An AR-15

I had my heart set on spending some of my tax money on a Bushy Dissapator AR-15, but I got my Mini 14 out and handled her, and have almost decided not to cheat on her.

Hey, those of you who have an AR-15 as a mistress, convince me to buy one.

I think they are expensive. I think they are high maintenance. But I think they are so so cool and, like an exotic woman, you can dress them up in almost infinite variations.

I don't need her, my Mini 14 defends hearth and home. It seems, I just want her.

So, tell me why I should buy an AR-15!

Sorry no help here. We had n AR when I was growing up. When I went out to buy my own, I couldnt afford it, so I bought a Mini-14. Saved money, saved money, shot the mini, shot the mini. Bought two more mini's. Later on when I could manage buying an AR, I bought a M1A instead. Dont want an AR anymore.

The way things are going in this country, I may "pick one up" in the future....HEHEHE.

Bun an AR because I can't.

I am screwed out here in the PRK. I wish I had the ability to legally buy an AR again. If you are not going to do it for yourself, do if for me. Thank you!

Talk you out of it? Heck, no.

I let myself be talked into believing I "needed" an AR three years ago. A year and a half ago, I realized it wasn't too late to get what I really wanted: a neat little M1 Carbine that weighed less, was easier to handle, and that cost half as much.

If you feel the need for a black rifle, get an FN/STG, or wait for an Armalite AR-180.

IF you are right-handed, then the dissipator seems like the best choice to me. Of all of my rifles, only M1 carbine beats the handling/ergonomics of the AR and I plan to standardize on them (two BMs in the family, looking for a spare now). Used to have a Mini14, prefer M1 carbine and Garand examples of rotary bolt design.

Dont get me wrong....I am and mini owner and enjoy it. I thinks its against board rules to compare one to an AR though. Its kinda like comparing a camaro to a corvette. They are both chevy's and both are v8's, but you know......

Then there's a view that a Mini14 can be functionally replaced by an AK clone (cheaper magazines, 223 or 5.45) with a receiver sight. That, of course, pre-supposes fighting uses. For hunting, the Mini ought to work just as well as an AK and offer better ergonomics.

Hi, guys,

Was shooting an AR-180 (the original model) today. Accurate and reliable, plus two-minute cleanup. No crud in the action, no dirty bolt to clean, no bolt carrier covered with carbon, no key full of garbage. Pull down the piston, clean with a patch and some G96, put together. A little lube on the bolt rods, and off to other stuff.

Love 'em. Just ordered an AR-180B. I think they are $500 something.

Jim

If you'd like to know what accuracy is at 400 yards, buy the AR.

I'm not knockin' the Mini-, it's a good short range defensive weapon, but it's not the most accurate rifle in the rack out of the box.

Why were you thinking about buying an AR in the first place?

Don't feel that you're cheatin' on her, I felt the same way when I bought a Kimber. Christ! What would my Walther's think?!

They all get along swimmingly. :D

Spike Likes AR's...

Nothing wrong with an AR. They cost more than a Mini-14 but there is no comparison when it comes to accuracy.
AR's will outshoot the Mini's right out of the box but if you need more accuracy you can always customise your AR for match accuracy.

I talked myself out of an AR when I bought my mini-14 citing price and such. This was pre-94(and I am kicking myself now for not buying a M4 type model then). So bought the mini and was happy. Did some mods on her and was still happy. Am still happy with her today. Then it happned in the normal gun stuff that I get in the mail Federal Arms Corp had to send me a catalog showing AR's for $499. That did it! Off to the gun shop where it cost with fees and such $558 out the door! Had to do it:D So the money for my cruise just had to wait for a couple of pays. I have only shot it once so far putting 100rds of various ammo through it. It is a keeper. The only thing "wrong" with it is the SPRONG in the stock when the recoil buffer pushes the bolt carrier back. If I remember right though the mini has a CLANG sound when it hits the receiver with the op rod. A shock buff takes care of that problem. So I guess that I can't really talk you out of an AR. I was in the same boat guy. Get one. Look at it this way you will have to but more ammo but at least not another caliber! hope that this helps. DAROGUE1

PS: You NEVER know what the gang on THE HILL are going to do next. Hopefully nothing in the next few years:cool:

You have done well. If you already have a Mini 14, you really have to want to do some two-timing to get an AR. ;)

So, tell me why I should buy an AR-15!

1) Coolness factor. Who's cooler, the man with the wood Mini-14, or the black she-devil AR-15?

2) Quick and easy cleaning. I can field strip my AR down with no tools, then strip the bolt with no tools, and all the parts fit in my lap. Makes lazy people like myself clean guns more often when it's that easy. A quick rubdown with readily-available Armor-All on the outside makes her look brand new every time, and mine is 20 years old.

3) Accuracy - already covered.

4) Until the US drops the M16 for it's chosen military rifle, surplus parts will not dry up. As a matter of fact, cooler new accesories will always be developed specifically for the AR as long as the US keeps the M16.

5) I didn't say this, nor would we encourage this, but 30 minutes in a shop with a small chunk of metal on a grinder makes her go THDTHDTHDTHDTHDTHDTHDTHDOOMMMMMMM!!!! 6 seconds later she's back to legal.

6) Did I mention Coolness?

7) Badass gunsmiths like Tromix develop uppers for the AR in many different calibers. Yes - even 50BMG. The uppers simply "bolt-on' with only a flat-head screwdriver and 2 minutes of your time. No gunsmith knowledge necessary.
Tony at Tromix has even developed a mongo 458 Socom cannon-cartridge for the AR that fits in the stock 223 mag.

8) I'm running out of breath here, one more and I'm done. Let's not forget the knowledgebase of AR expertise out there. With the AR's popularity, more gunsmiths have devoted their total time and expertise to the modification, accurizing and development of the AR. There's not a question you've thought of that hasn't been answered out on the net, or in a book, about the AR. Not one, no matter how bizarre.

Buy the AR. If the Mini says anything, the AR will shut her up with a quick bitch-slap.

I have a mini with factory folding stock and a bunch of 20 rd mags, but got a Bushmaster shorty and a 20" heavy barrel upper and there's no looking back. I like hitting what I'm shooting at and you can't beat a Bushy for that

Get an AR. The hi cap mags are alot cheaper and can be found alot easier than hi cap mini 14 mags. The AR, I don't care what anyone says, is not a high maintenance weapon. If it takes you more than 30 minutes to clean it you are over cleaning it. I've gone out and shot 1000 rounds at a time with no problems whatsoever. I have yet to have a a problem with my Bushmaster. Maybe if we were in desert conditions in combat or something like that it would require more attention. But I look at it this way, I'm not in a combat situation, and will probably never be so I'm not too concerend about it.

GET AN AR15...GET AN AR15...GET AN AR15!!!!!!!

YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE!!!!!

I'm not sure why you keep saying "high maintenance". What do you mean by that? A complete, detailed cleaning takes some time (as with any rifle) but routine cleaning isn't a big deal. Spray parts with CLP- wipe off - run a patch down the easily accessible barrel -and go.

USGI Ar-15 mags: $20
Padded case for AR-15: $40
500 rounds PMP: $72
Olympic Arms Plinker Ar15, dealer: $490
Hitting what you aim at, with easier magazine changes, commonality of parts, no need for factory fitting of replacement parts, owner didnt sell his soul to the UN or Slick Willy, and owning a gun that pisses off DiFi, Chucky and Babs Boxer: Priceless.
