This followed me home from the gunshow today along with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10

What I know.

Chamber 6.5-06
HVA action
Canjar single set trigger with tang safety
Leupold 7.5X scope with AO.
Metal butt plate with trapdoor
RCBS FL size die 6.5-06

What I'm not sure of.

What model HVA this is?
Douglas barrel 1:10 twist?
Conetrol rings? Bases say Buhler?
If I'll ever warm up to the stock?

Made In Sweden?

Made in Sweden...

This is likely what you have, a Husky made action that was produced from 1953 to 1967. It should have a long Mauser extractor and mechanical ejector with a sliding safety button. Does the action have a serial # stamped on to it?

I would be nervous the barrel is shot out seeing as it seems to be an older gun, and I would imagine 6.5-06 can beat on a barrel?

Looks like a Husqvarna 8000 action. 6.5-06 is a real sweetheart of a cartridge, I would bet you will like it just fine. It appears the barrel shank is very short, maybe the barrel has already been set back.

The stock looks like it started life as a nice custom stock (not exactly my style, but it was somebody's style), but was modified to accomodate the Canjar trigger. Skip-line checkering looks like it has had plenty of carrying and use, needs to be sharpened up. It also appears that it has been repaired by someone other than who built it, judging by the screw through the grip cap. THe cheekpiece looks like cancer, it needs to be worked on. With some work, it could be cleaned up and revamped to look nice.

The scope looks like a nice late 1970s Leupold M6 fixed power scope. Nothing wrong with those.

So what are you going to do with it?

I'll shoot it first and and then decide what I'm going to do with it. If it shoots well I'll probably restock it at some point. If it doesn't shoot well I may rebarrel or send it down the road. I've got a .223 rifle that will probably get the scope regardless of what I do with it.

I'm sure I can get close to my money out of it if I decide to part ways with the rifle in the future.

If it is a shooter I would take a rasp to the cheekpiece and shape the butt stock to something I liked, sand out the checkering, then paint it.

Scorch, do you think the screw through the grip cap could have been done when the tang safety was installed? I did get to talk to the original owner of this rifle, and he said he had tried to use the factory HVA safety with the Canjar trigger at first. He had problems with the factory safety so the tang safety that came with the trigger was installed by a gunsmith later.

Hard to say. Maybe the grip cap came loose and the owner didn't know how to reattach it, or maybe the grip cap came off several times. Unless you talk to the person that put the screw there, it is just speculation.

My first custom 60's had a stock with that type rollover was quite the style back then. The one set screws close to the forend should of been one on the other side was something Remington came up with the very early 40x so you could adjust forend pressure.

Beside Douglas you had Apex barrels also Ackley made barrels. I agree with Scorch my guess would be that barrel was on something else or 6.5x55??? and new chamber cut as shank should of been longer. Sure not a good job on the #'s.

I agree with Scorch , get out the rasp and reshape that stock . Looks like you've got plenty of wood to work with ! I like the tang safety mod .

I got to shoot the rifle yesterday using the old handloads. 54 grains 4831 (type wasn't listed) CCI 250 primers, and 140 grain Rem CL bullets, all loaded in old military 06 brass. There wasn't any pressure signs but the load seemed pretty middle of the road from what I could find.

Good news is the rifle shows potential to shoot well. The scope was way out of adjustment, and I think I'm going to send it into Leupold for a once over. I ran out of horizontal adjustment when I got it back on paper, I can fix some of that with the windage screws. I just think that I'll send it to Leupold just in case.

Glad to hear you may have a keeper, from the sounds of it. If it looks like its a shooter, you are over half way there! It looks like a good project gun, if you want to go that direction with it. Good luck on what ever you decide.

You can neck 30-06 shells for this as well not just 25-06 like someone said. Very accurarate and yes they can burn on the barrel. I would try shooting it like this and see how well it shoots, if its pretty good, get a good stock on it though
