Offer declined for my S&W 586

I bought a Python about 30 years ago and had to save the money up for it. A S&W M27 was 60% of the price of the Python but I got the Python.

It is worth the experience but I would go a different route nowadays. I am still a revolver guy:).

Trading is always tricky because both parties have to agree on relative values of all items on the table. To show how disenchanted I am with trading the last trade offer I made was 35 years ago. I had a gun that was selling for about $400. Guy had a gun that usually sold for $300-$350. Mine was a little more valuable. But I wanted what he had more than I wanted what I had. So I offered a straight up trade. He looked me in the face and said my gun was only worth $150 to him. So I told him to go try to buy one for that amount.

Since then I trade cash for items I want. We always agree on the value of cash. If I have something I no longer want I sell it. No more trading for me...ever.

You made a good call.

Don't be surprised if Colt decides to re-release the Python at some point. I'm sure their marketing dept has already discussed it.

1. How did you like it?
2. Do you still have it?
3. If you don't mind, what did you pay for it back then.
4. If you still have it, are you going to sell it?

Saxon-I think a person has to develop a certain attitude/personality to trade guns (or anything for that matter) and come out ahead. Maybe you have to be born with it but IMhO it's a learned thing. Personally I try to follow Cheapshooter's rule and not get rid of any of my guns. (It'll make the estate sale that much more interesting.)

HA! Read this thread:

I'm not sure Colt HAS a marketing dept or maybe it does but the current management doesn't know where they are...IMhO you and a half dozen other folks on this forum could take over the company and do a better job of running it than the current folk. Say...there's a thought..."Colt - a wholly owned subsidiary of TFL"

.which is insane unless I plan on just sitting on it as an investment. The action is fragile, and replacement parts are drying up. As a shooter, the Smith is a far more reasonable choice

^^^ THIS

The only thing the Python will give you over your 586 is bragging rights, it does nothing that your 586 cant do equally as well, and to be honest I think a 586 looks better than a Python.

Thanks guys/gals. I also thought I did the smart move too... But that's me. Who knows, maybe pythons could prices could balloon up to 6/7K in the future and I threw away an awsome deal haha.

Back in my youth (misspent) I had a choice between a Python and Highway Patrol. After testing both I bought the Smith. NIB around $300. The Python a bit more. Both 6" versions. I never regretted that decisions. I did regret, years later, selling my SW and regret it to this day.

Hmmm... I wonder what would happen if Taurus came out with a Python looking clone?

Probably need to go back to the factory twice before it worked and go outta time quicker then the colt. ;)

Just saw one @ scheels here for the low low price of 3k. thing even had some rust.

I absolutely had to have it in 1985 and got a pre-owned but unfired Python for $400 plus tax.

I still have it and am waiting for a good opportunity to give it to my youngest son, together with the OMM that he is so interested in.

As to its shooting performance; I also own half a dozen Ruger D/A revolvers, many S&Ws and eleven Korths. The Colt Python, mine is a 1972 vintage, is very well made with a great bluing job and has an outstanding S/A trigger. In double action my personal preference is the S&W trigger characteristics.

Pietta is going to launch the Python clone's sale very soon and on the Coltforum ( and S&W forum ) it has incited a lively discussion.

The stainless sibling has been sold

Sorry don't know how to show photo yet. Clicked on little mountain icon and shows a link but don't know which link to use

Well, their older model 689 vent ribs came pretty close. You can find them for anywhere around $250 to $550+ depending on condition. They are actually very nice guns from earlier Taurus. If you could find one in good condition for not much money, I say jump on it. I own a model 669 (same gun but the non-vent rib version) and absolutely love it. Great shooter and built very well.

Here is a picture I found of a Taurus 689 sitting next to a Python (not mine, found it on the interwebs). While not the same, it does kind of have that look with the vent rib and everything.

PzGren-thanks for the information.

Good pictures of some nice guns. Passing them on to the next generation sure seems like a nice thing to do.

I'm not sure what's going on with Python prices. 5 years ago a lgs had a nickel 6 inch in the case for $800 and I thought that was too much.

I have a 4 inch nickel inherited from my dad that will never be for sale but upwards of 3k....uhhhh no. Its pretty but for my money a good ruger gp or old 686 would win everytime.

Hell I think my 66-2 is a lot prettier and shoots way better than the colt. I will say the Python has the best factory trigger ive ever encountered but not at the insane prices they are asking.
