Very, very few. Australian gunowners have long prided themselves -- as you do -- on being law-abiding.

The few who spoke out in the 'cold dead hands' vein were pilloried by the media, held up to public ridicule, and hounded by police.

As for defence, you've never been "allowed" to use a firearm for self-defence unless your life or that of a member of the household was in immediate and dire danger. You can only use "reasonable force", which is measured in each individual case. If someone breaks into your home, even if armed with a knife, and they are NOT attempting to kill you -- if you use a gun, you will be charged and probably convicted.

However, an old shottie or .22 behind the door gave a lot of people some comfort -- before the new laws made this a criminal act and virtually impossible.
