NRA Statement

A big part of this is simply weathering (and not extending) the "news" cycle. Hopefully the hysterics will subside and there will be some rational discussion about things that might actually be helpful rather than bad ideas rife with unintended consequences.

I hope you are correct, but keep in mind many pushing those bad ideas have been doing so for a long time. The President has pretty much already stated that he wants to see a ban on certain firearms and magazines. He has also placed the VP in charge of the commission and asked for recommendations within a month. So, I suspect they are going to do their best to bring this to a head sooner than later rationally or not.

Well, it's about all they could say given what happened. Like it or not, mob rule runs this country. And us gun owners that actually care are becoming a minority. Last thing we need are the Ted Nugents of the world running their mouths making us all look like morons and turning everyone against us.

What happened was a terrible tragedy and if there is anything that the NRA can do to prevent it from happening again they should. Like it or not the anti's are Americans who are doing what they think is best for their country, same as us.

As things stand, this pretty much sums up my somewhat fluctuating feelings on the subject. As I said in another thread, I find myself questioning what it is I truly believe. Doesn't mean I've flipped my wig or turned anti-2A just means that I'm hurting and questioning my priorities. Only time will tell where I personally land in regards to this.

Which is why you need to carefully examine the facts so that your opinions are informed rather than emotional. These atrocities sicken us all and our gut reaction is "My God. We've got to do SOMETHING." Unfortunately, we too often end up doing "something" that feels like it might work but isn't based on facts.

We need to address the root cause, not the choice of tools.

Of course you are right. I realize that this is a multi faceted problem and quite honestly "Assault Weapons" and other rifles and sidearms are in and of themselves not the problem. That much I am certain of.

I don't know what the answer is and it's not something that can be solved by any single legislative swipe of a pen upon any one group of people. Nevertheless a problem exists and it does partly, possibly, lie in our laps. I believe it is key that we be a part of the conversation if it comes to that rather than just giving the standard party line.

I'm not trying to be obtuse in any way, I'm just saying that if any legislation is to come down on our side of the fence that we will be best served if we are a part of that conversation.

Things I am certain of:
1. We (as a people) need to remove the stigma associated with mental health and seeking help with mental health issues.
2. We (as a people) need to make it easier for those who need help with mental health issues to actually get that help.
3. We (as gun owners) need to be part of any and all discussions that may be more close to home as the alternative will not be pretty in the least. In other words we don't need Ted Nugent speaking for us as much as he may entertain me at times.

Everything else, I'm still mulling over.
