Wildalaska, you've never handled or fired a FAMAS. How do I know? In the 60's through the late 90's my Dad was a Clll and a rep for H&K, Valmet and Stoeger Arms. Stoeger brought in the first 15 FAMAS rifles and that was it because the door slammed on the import three weeks later. 5 were returned to the French Exporter because they hadn't been claimed by the dealers, but my Dad did get his. That ledt 9 more that were received by those dealers.
It's handy feeling, functions smoothly and is dead accurate. I don't have a MAS and have never fielded one, so I know nothing about their traits or accuracy, but I do know about the FAMAS.

Dad is now retired, but he has some pretty cool rifles.

So, only 10 FAMAS are in the country? Amazing that your father has one, and very lucky. I'm very jealous, because it is a neat rifle. How heavy is it?

Sigh...Wildalaska has held and fired a FAMAS as his shooting buddy bought one way back when.

WA wasnt impressed. WA liked the AUG more, and even, as funky as they were, the PE57 and the AMT.

WA recalls Century importing them but he could be wrong, but there were about 150 of them brought in IIRC

PS hey look WA was right

My Dad just said that he wasn't aware of Century bringing them in. He thought only Stoeger had the import rights.
Yes, it's pretty heavy. Finding one is one thing. Getting the owner to part with it is quite another.
My apolgies to WA. That was pretty weird.

WA is has proven to be as wise as he is crotchety:D cut him some slack for being opinionated.

I look at the sks and mas and have to ask, why would you want a rifle as ugly as an sks, and the more american stuff you put on it, the uglier it gets.

I do understand the appeal of the mas, it has a unique and interesting asthetic. Buy the mas, learn about it, shoot it, learn to reload for it.

One can say the same thing about American weaponry. I personally find most American made weaponry, besides the wood M1A and Ruger Minis, hideous.

The SKS and AK are quite appealing to me, as is most European/Russian weaponry. The M76, SVD and PSL are some of the most visually appealing rifles in the world, in my opinion, especially a wood SVD.

I don't blame WA for his opinions, I just don't like the way some of his posts sounded so, negative, not even constructive really.

You wont regret the SKS or ak you will enjoy range time more then the MAS. I love european and soviet weapons. The soviet weapons aren't made for looks not by any means but for down and dirty combat. Loading wise I can load my 1903 strippers faster then my m14 with mags.I love shooting both when I dust them off. its ultimately your choice. The Mas is more of a gun shelf these days, but the SKS its more of a workhorse.

I havent posted here that much, mainly because I hang out in the FAL Files forums and have done for some years. Nevertheless, my experience with military/milsurps goes back to 1970 (actually before then using my Dad's stuff from ww2) and encompassed quite a few small arms, American and foreign. So take this with whatever salt or FWIW you please.
IF your purpose is to have a rifle to shoot and get to know and use in any protracted social "situation"... collapse, Katrina, ::insert your emergency here:: you will need something with a track record, something that doesnt break down or is easily fixed, spare parts are available and ammunition is generally easy to find in the USA. This alone votes the French rifle off the island... But you know this already.... ANYTHING that is out of the ordinary is not a good choice, if only because of parts interchangeability and available smith work.... The French rifle in this country is more a collectors item than a "go to " gun... Not that it wouldnt work, but..... a .30-30 would be easier to feed or fix.
One could do worse than an SKS, lots of them in country, lots of aftermarket supplies, ammo available by the case for reasonable prices.. scopeable fairly easy... and even capable of some accuracy even with the smallish round. AND MADE TO TAKE THE MISUSE OF POORLY TRAINED TROOPS IN ANY ENVIRONMENT YOU ARE LIKELY TO MEET. It wouldnt be my first choice, but one could do far WORSE.
Personally I'd take the 350 and spend it on a good AK plus whatever it took to stock up ammo and magazines. A chromed bore is best, (if marginally less accurate) because of wear and cleaning issues, over the unchromed. Then PRACTICE with it. Get to know your rifle of choice in all conditions, including the dark.. Good Luck and best wishes

Blasphemous? No, just my own opinion on most of it, I got a few pieces here and there that are american, but Its just like some like chocolate ice cream others like Vanilla, and some (like me) like Mint Chip.
