Not enough crimp ????? , at range now

BREAK BREAK .... Somehow I got the idea this was a straightwall/auto....

DUMB
Grasshoppa.

Forget the Gray
Uuuuuhhh... Neither the 45ACP nor the std 9mm need "crimp/swage-taper" in my experience... assuming the OP has FL-sized the case.

But then I tend to use standard weight/fast-medium powders in those calibers.

If we were talking 357/44/500, I'd sing a different tune as to powders/crimp, but then I'd be using roll crimp into a crimp (or top lube) groove as well.
On the heavy (340gr) 45 Colt I've come to use a Redding Profile crimp... but the no-kidding roll at the top is my go-to belt-above-suspenders insurance.

I give my 9mm almost no crimp and it does only remove the bell on the case mouth but I think my die setting on those cartridges do apply a light crimp and is why I say I crimp . I was getting bullet set back on my new 1911 so I crimped those a little more . The problem there is that I shoot my 45acp rounds in multiple guns so they all get crimped because there’s a chance they will go through that 1911.

This seems to be similar to the mixed brass is gtg statement so many seem to say . So many also say you don’t need to crimp 9mm & 45acp as well . One of my guns seems to need it because it feeds the rounds hard and or aggressively creating bullets set back . To fix the problem I apply a light crimp to all my 45acp rounds .

As far as my 45 Lee FCD , it is what it is . I believe this is one of those “Lee” products that lacked some good QC . I believe that ring is out of spec or at the tight end of spec . I think this because none of my other FCD’s swage down the cartridge like my 45 die does . It’s my understanding this is not new to the Lee line and I can request a larger ring be put in the die or get a new die that has the larger ring .

Get the Lee Collet Crimp die, not to be confused with the FCD. Much more effective and easier on the brass. I've been using them on both my .357's and .41's for about 8 years and would never go back to roll crimping.

I've been roll crimping revolver rounds since the 70s. Never used anything but the built in crimp of the standard seater die. Never had any issues when I set things correctly. Never saw any need for anything else. Since it works for me, I never saw any point to buying a "better mousetrap".

I taper crimp auto pistol rounds. A light kiss on small rounds, a bit more for .45ACP, and a solid crimp (or heavier) on other.44 & .45 rounds.
I have bought separate taper crimp dies for calibers where the standard die set didn't include one.

NONE of them are Lee, just a matter of my personal preference.

Not sure if you know or others in this thread . To clarify , the carbide ring I'm speaking of is at the base/mouth of the FCD . It is not part of the actual crimping process . The case passes through it before the crimping actually happens . I believe the thinking on this "extra" step Lee adds to there FCD is to swage down bulged cases to insure they still chamber . As I said before all my other FCD's don't really make contact with this ring as they enter the die . It's just my 45acp that does . FWIW if I just seat a bullet and don't use the FCD , that round will pass my Wilson case gauge and is another reason I think the 45 FCD is a tad out of spec .
