Not AR, Not AK

How about a 7615 Rem pump nice clips, folding stock or telescoping stock tac rails just a thought.:D 223 of course.

I have heard people say they aren't that accurate? Is that just garbage from people who don't know the gun? Or do they have some issues in quality control?

Not garbage, fact. I've owned several. If I didn't want an AR I'd still take the Ruger over most anything else though. They are not in the same league with an AR in accuracy or reliability and they now cost more. But I'd still prefer one to an AK or just about anything else.

I don't think the Ruger has any issues with quality control. The rifle is well made and reliable. It was just never designed for what many people try to do with it. It was designed as an inexpensive rifle for farmers and ranchers to keep in a truck or tractor for an occasional shot at a coyote. It was never meant for combat, and isn't designd for precision shooting.

I love my C93... It eats everything I can throw at it now that I cleaned it out well. (Had some issues with some Salt Lake 62 grain because of junk behind the extractor)

It's comfortable to shoot but aftermarket stuff is usually pretty costly when you find it. HKparts.net has a ton of crap so does Robertrtg? (I think thats right). But in it's stock configuration it's fun on it's own. Just do your research before you buy and learn how to take one apart.

I never knew the Mini-14 I bought back in the mid 1970's was inaccurate until I read about it on the Internet. Sometimes ignorance is bliss! :)

Ditto. I find that most people making this claim also don't own the rifle that they're making the claim about. I sold an older Mini about five years ago and regretted it so much that I bought a new one as soon as the 580s came out. Nice thing about that rifle is that to the average eye, it looks like a hunting rifle when the flush 5round mag is fitted.

The older Mini-14s can have minute of clay pigeon accuracy at 100 yds if you allow the barrel to cool between shot. I have attained that with mine. The newer Mini-14s have a shorter and stiffer barrel which makes them less subject to heat and therefore greater accuracy.

There are no shortage of black rifles to select from. In addition to reliability, you might want to consider spare parts availability, magazine availability, ease of maintaining and servicing, weight and ergonomics as factors in reaching your decision.

Mini-14

If you let the barrel cool. Just what you need in a semi auto rifle with muzzle loader cyclic rate of fire. Accuracy sucks on RUGER mini's, and I'd take an SKS anyday and twice on sunday's. I saw guys spend a thousand bucks trying to get these to shoot, and they did, for the first shot.

I have a 580 series mini-14 with an accustrut and trigger job. My best group at 100yrds. is 1.25''. Thats after a 20rd mag dump. I know its not sub-moa but I dont care. It wasnt never meant to be. The strut stops the shot stringing completely. It also helps cool the barrel down faster. The new mini's are a vast improvement over the older ones and now with struts the older ones can be made to perform just as good with the 20th shot as they do with the first shot. Some people just like to bash based on what they have heard. Ignorance is bliss.

I have a 580 mini bone stock....With open sights it is PLENTY accurate. WAY more reliable than the AR. You can throw a handfull of sand in the mini and it will shoot 1000 rounds. Try that in an AR. Now, if you bullbarrel and scope an AR it will outshoot 100 on paper. But in realworld money for money the mini wins. Nothing wrong with either gun. Just don't expect the mini to shoot sub MOA out of the box. It can be done, but then you are in AR prices again.

If I couldn't pick either an AR or AK, I'd get an HK93. Those guns are just cool. Heck I'd pick one over an AR.

Mini-14 also interests me.

Well Joe, the OP asked what .223 semi auto not AR or AK. Then after someone mentioned mini-14 the bashers came out. Not wanting the OP to get discouraged about the mini-14 I related my experience with my mini-14 as well as letting the bashers know they were wrong. As far as my previous post, it wasnt meant to be a brag session. It was the truth.
