Non +P .38 Ammo

Please recommend non-+P .38 ammo for use in an S&W 3" air weight Kit Gun. I would prefer some sort of coating on the bullet to minimize lead accumulation in the barrel.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm curious to know the differences in terms of function and effect between the 158gr LRN and the 158gr FMJ . . . (both of which are listed on the Natchez page, and are priced the same).

Tyro

Would it be correct to assume, as a rule, that the heavier the bullet is, the more severe the recoil will be?

Tyro

Tyro - IMHO, the heavier the bullet, heavier the recoil.

The nyclad is a good recommendation. I have had good luck with a 148 jacketed wadcutter loaded by Atlanta Arms.

What are you planning to use it for?

Tyro, try the Winchester white box USA 125 or 130 gr fmj for practice it is really soft shooting in these airweights about 770fps or so. I find the Federals loud and bright in the 2", don't know if there any better in 3". The biggest help for these lightweight guns is, in my opinion, the sile rubber grip from www.cdnninvestments.com for $3.99, covers the backstrap and is thin and lightweight, plus it is a little wider in the front to back dimension, which gave me better finger position on these small guns. Good shootin.

Thanks, sox.

Your comment sent me searching the Winchester ammo on cheaperthandirt.com.

Anyone have and comments re WinClean .38 Special Jacketed Soft Point 125 grains, 775 fps?

Tyro

The WinClean has worked fine for practice and training in all of my .38s. Especially good if in indoor range - and ya can catch it for 9 or 10 bucks a box. Just speaking from memory and not from notes, I think it may have a little more muzzle flash than some others. But I/we shoot a lot of snubbies ...

158 LRN v. 158 FMJ........

My experiance is that you'll get a small hole drilled through what ever (whomever) you shoot with it.

The nyclad will work - my only problem with lighter weight bullets has bbeen that the point of aim/point of impact don't always work out.

I use the previously mentioned 148s for practice (hits close enough) and carry 158 LSWCHP +Ps.

S&B AMMO

Tyro

LRN= Lead Round Nose (Exposed led no metal jacket whatsoever)
FMJ= Full Metal Jacket (Led core covered in copper)
The S&B lead round nose are just as they say The full metal jacket rounds r usually TRUNCATED CONEs both 158 Grains. I have shot thousands and thousands and thousands of all types of S&B 38 and 357 in FMJ, LRN and wad cutters out of my 6in S&W 686 and never a dud in the bunch. but for self defense go with one of the major brands and use the S&B for practice. Also check other boards for some more opinions some guys dont like the S&B

I'm with Snowdog - Federal 125gr Nyclad HP standard pressure. Made for short barrels and still available at [ http://www.ammoman.com/ ], at least for the moment. I understand Federal has recently relegated its nyclad line to the ranks of its LEO products. :(

With a 3"? The only way to go is a 158 SWC or all lead JHP. That extra inch makes a difference. Don't waste it on 125s.

Many thanks for all the responses.

Jeff OTMG,

Re
RBCD is loaded to standard pressures
I take it you are recommending RBCD standard pressure for use in my 3" AirLite Kit Gun? Can you tell me why?

This is the first I've heard of RBCD.

Tyro

Winchester make a nice 125 JHP in a personal defense load in 38 +p that does not have a heavy recoil. I got some a Wally world for $10 a box. I personally load my own 158gr LSWC for 38spec. I have found that the 125gr bullets have a sharper recoil and the 158gr bullets have a stronger push.

Jeff OTMG,

I did a search re RBCD and found your answer (to my question above) in your posts on other threads.

Many thanks,

Tyro

I received an e-mail from my contact at Federal last week...

He stated that indeed, "Nyclad was going to PD sales only". "Strictly an economic decision, we simply didn't sell enough".
I wonder though. I've read many posts asking, Where is the Nyclad"? I think that there's another reason for this and he's not telling me.

KR

I really like the Win-Clean they are very CLEAN, and to me worth the extra price. I would like to see the Win-Clean in 158grain, that would probably make a great defense round. I also like the Nyclad,s.
