Once again, the point isn't to put hearing protection ahead of saving your life.

The point is that, given time to do so, donning hearing protection is a good idea; and, that now, while you are thinking about it ahead of time, you have the option to select a gun/round combo that is effective for defense, yet likely to cause somewhat less damage than other choices might cause.

Lots of things don't matter when you are under immediate threat. That doesn't mean you can't try to set things up in advance to mitigate problems that can be anticipated.

that extra thought could be your life

when seconds count dont for one millisecond worry about the gun noise.

that being said, don't do it on purpose. I use plugs and muffs in conjunction.

In my youthful years in California, I shot guns without muffs and rode motorcycles without a helmet... my current hearing status is, in a word, crap.

I bought a pair of Peltor TacSport muffs a few years back and keep them on the nightstand... just in case. They actually improve my ability to hear ambient sounds, so the idea is that I pop them on, close and lock the bedroom door, then grab the shotgun while the wife calls 911.
I've done this once about a year ago when a tree fell on my house, and based on my wife's laughter, I'm sure I look like an idiot, standing there in my boxers with orange muffs on. :D

My point was that I don't see the need to practice without hearing protection. I don't believe, in a self defense scenario, you will be effected by the muzzle report. By effected I mean it won't effect your tactics or accuracy, (the BGs muzzle report will though.) I do believe unprotected shooting will do harm and yes I have some hearing problems.

I experienced a little bit of hearing loss when my stocking cap interfered with the seal on my electronic ear muffs. This was in an outdoor hunting situation. Felt like cotton in my ears for three days. - - I have no desire to shoot indoors on purpose without protection on.

I choose firearms, particularly handguns, with muzzle blast in mind. A 357 Mag produces twice the sound energy of a 45 Colt. My favorite handgun cartridges are the 45 Colt and 44 Special - very effective with minimum blast and fuss. If an emergency situation were to arise where you need to shoot your gun now you may not have the time to put on your hearing protection.

The hearing doc who examined me said that everyone is different in terms of their sensitivity to loud noises. One time can permanently damage your hearing. Its difficult to hunt or be at your best in a self defense situation if youre deaf.

Given how inexpensive you can find electronic hearing muffs - I recently found a pair for $35 - its worth having one (or several) pairs. Put them next to your firearms.

Once in a Gun Fighting Course last year shooting out of my car thru the passenger window. There were different passes on the target, drive up and shoot round the drivers front windshield post, out of the car and around the front hood, and thru the passenger window. After the second pass, I took my electronic headphones off to let my ears rest while the rest of the class did their drive by's. Third time up, both front windows open, instructor says Fight, I draw and put 4 rounds into Bob the target with my G-19 and it was really loud. Took about 30 minutes before things started getting better and a couple of hours before the ringing stopped. If I ever get into a CCW shooting situation I will not have ear protection on anyway.
