I specifically chose my HK USP in 40 S&W for my "nightstand gun". I keep one in the pipe and decocked. My rationale:

a) I don't want to wake up and have to remember to rack the slide or to disengage the safety.
b) I don't want to risk an ND so I appreciate that first 13ish lbs. trigger pull in double action.

For me a reliable DA/SA gun met my "nightstand gun" requirements.

ignorance

what does ND stand for? i understand what is happening but what is the meaning? no question is stupid it's the question you don't ask.

My carry gun is also my home defense gun, and stays cocked and locked and within arms reach 24/7. The only time it gets unloaded is when i shoot it empty :D

My bedside is my carry gun a Sig 226 the only time the chamber is empty is when I am cleaning it. 46 years and I haven't tried to talk into it yet.

Isn't this dangerous?

This isn't a judgement or anything, but I wonder about the risk/reward ratio here. I'm assuming the majority of people here don't live amongst gang-bangers and so I'm wondering what is the need for this?

I'd like to learn how to shoot a rifle for ranges and maybe hunting when I'm good enough. As such, I've started thinking about getting a handgun for the wife as I travel a lot. We don't live in a bad area at all, it's a 'just in case' thing. However, if it's pointless to have a handgun for defense unless you have a round in the pipe then she'd never agree to it. Insight would be appreciate.

Cheers

like badlander siad, all the homeprotectors are loaded, if the dog starts barking, the glock 21 (always hot) and my pistol grip converted saiga 12 with an ati night scope are within reach. i can pick up the saiga and flip the nightvision with iluminator on, so i can be sure what im about to shoot is a bad guy. my wife also has a pistol grip converted saiga 20 on her side and her taurus 745

my XD has one in the pipe at all times unless the gun itself in is pieces being cleaned. if i have to grab it in the middle of the night, every second counts and i dont want to have to worry about racking it in the dark and the slim chance something weird happening (jamming issue of some sort). i know that every time my hand hits the grip its ready to do what i need should the time come

I carry my gun loaded. I don't have a "night time" mode.

If someone has issues with only being semi-awake when things go bump in the night, then they can make whatever arrangement is safe for them. Maybe having to get out of bed and take one or two steps to reach their gun to insure they're fully awake.

Having to rack the slide might be a solution for some, also. But not as a general practice just because it's night time.

I keep it cocked and locked:

An always loaded (with one in the pipe) Colt .45 auto. It is ready to go any time day or night. All I need to do is thumb down the safey and pull the trigger when needed.

I keep one in each of the six pipes (my bedside gun is a revolver)

Wasn't there a story about keeping a loaded gun near the bed and the phone ringing late at night and the sleepy guy put the gun to his head instead of the phone and.... well you know

Yet another reason I don't have a telephone next to my bed:D
