NICS does not need your SSN

You can get a new SSN, but it's pretty hard to do and the old # is "linked" to it in the gubmint's databases anyway.
I forget the reason you have to have for getting one. I think if you are a victim of identity fraud or something like that.
You are allowed to do this ONCE during your lifetime. (I do believe)

(Hey, papercut those smileys are makin' me dizzy! I like 'em)

BTW, how do I know this you ask? Just a little consumer information. ;)

It's a common scam among "credit repair" companies to tell you they will get you a new SSN.
Yes, my EX husband and his friend were, in fact going to start just such a company. That is, until I found "documented proof" that it was illegal to misrepresent bad credit as being identity theft for purposes of securing a new SSN and how much trouble said companies could get into for doing such a thing. (my comments that it simply wasn't right and it preyed on people who already were obviously pretty broke just wasn't good enough)
No company can "repair" your credit. The only legitimate thing they can do is help you find errors in your credit reports and have you write letters to credit reporting agencies; something you can do yourself.
OK, back to topic, sorry....

I completely disagree with the statement that you NEED it to acquire credit.

About 3 months ago I applied via mail for a MAJOR bank's airline mileage credit card and DID NOT PROVIDE the SSN. Of course about 10 days after I applied they sent me a letter saying that the application was pending my SSN. I called and bitched. They claimed they needed it to verify my true identity.

I could see that could be the case if my name was John Smith or something that common, but I asked them to check to see just how many Paul Revere's could live at my address. Their D&B or similar credit check using my name and address obviously verified the information they needed, because about 2 weeks later I got the credit card with a $5,000 credit line in the mail...without using the SSN!!!

Perhaps, but I'm willing to bet they have your SSN anyway. I was denied car insurance by 4 different providers, since I did not want to give them my SSN. A blatant violation of the law. I guess I don't *have* to drive, do I? Bastards.

Any idea if SSN is required for CCW? I was told it was in AZ. Not sure about Idaho, my current state.
