NGD/Range Report: GP100 Match Champion

I just picked up a new GP100 Match Champion. $700 out the door at a local one-man gun shop, and holy cow, this thing is a SHOOTER. Here's my first few cylinders worth of 158 .357mag from 15 yards...

A few things about this firearm...

The sights are top notch. Novaks, front and back.

The double-action trigger is a DREAM.

The factory installed Hogue wood grips are fantastic. No need for custom grips here.

It's a great firearm!

NGD=New Gun Day???

Congratulations on your purchase. A Ruger revolver just reeks of reliability. I'm willing to bet you can shoot it all you want and pass it on to one of your offspring and they'll be able to do the same.

The wood grips that come on the Match Champion are some of the best I've tried on ANY revolver.... SWEET guns to be sure, congrats OP!

I'm not sure why I would practice anything further than 15 yards... This is my defensive gun.
Because practicing at 25 yards makes you better at 15, the same way that practicing in DA makes you better in SA. Or, at least, it made me better.

From your photos, you are already a much better shooter than me, but I've personally seen much faster improvement since I started practicing DA at long range.

ETA: I just realized I forgot to congratulate you on your new gun. I love my GP-100, and I'm glad you do, too.

I have never heard that line of thought, George, but it makes perfect sense. I'll try it! Thanks for the lesson, that's why we all come here, right?

What is your carry load for your gun?

I like to use Federal 125 grain SJHP loads in my KGPF-340 with 4" half lug barrel:

i sold my match champion last weekend.... it was cool and shot pretty good and i wanted to really like it but it just sat around and never got to shoot it that much....why you may ask, because i like my smith and wesson 986 a million times better.... cheap 9mm ammo and deadly accurate plinking fun all day...

Yet you stood there, trying for your best group on a stationary target?

I'm all in favor of marksmanship, but be clear to yourself when you're practicing your marksmanship; and when you're doing that, do that. But be sure to work on other skills, too.

Hey, that's a good group no matter what anyone else says!
Just tell them that you tried to make it look like a dude holding a gun....like a smiley face!LOL

Everyone, all the OP was doing was showing his first group out of the gun!
A nice centered group with .357 no less.

First thing I do is see how well the gun shoots with various ammo to POA and see how tight a group on a stationary paper target to establish the baseline before shooting other defensive techniques, n'est pas?(French for isn't that so?)

MrBorland,

Accuracy is the decisive factor in defensive scenarios (speed, surprise, and others follow very close behind). Sure, it's a stationary target in a sterile environment, but this is day one with my newest defensive gun. I am extremely clear on what I'm working on, friend.

What have you enjoyed shooting lately?

Yes. Much! All the internal parts on the Match Champ are tumbled and polished, making the trigger action like butter.

Match Champion

Congrats on your super purchase. I have the GP 100 4.2 " with the Houge grips.
My target range is 10 yards but I practice at 20. Only DA and I thought I had gone to heaven. Now I have to see about the Match Champion. Question, does the 2 ounces make any noticeable difference??
PS: You're a better shot than I am. CK out my post from a month and a half ago.
