Next purchase advice: AR:15 or .308 bolt action?

Rhys16,

I shoot rifles left handed, like you, and have never saw the appeal of a left handed anything other than the charging handle latch and bolt catch/release. Both of those things can be fixed with (relatively) inexpensive aftermarket parts (BCM Gunfighter ambi charging handle and a Magpul BAD lever). Also, if this rifle is for SHTF then left handed semi auto is a bad idea, not too many left handed BCGs floating around out there. I highly suggest an AR15 given the current political climate. I believe that everyone should own one simply because anti gunners don't want you to. That and it serves your SHTF purposes nicely. I would recommend the following set up:

Barreled Upper- $209.99

Complete Bolt Carrier Group- $99.99

Ambi Charging Handle- $69.99

*I don't believe ambi is totally necessary, if you mount your optic so that it doesn't interfere it is possible to cup your hand over the top of the rifle and slide it back so that it catches the release latch

Complete Lower- $179.99

*this is the only part that won't ship to your door

That setup puts you at $559.96 before shipping and FFL fees and leaves a little wiggle room in your budget for sights/optics, Mags, and ammo. A BAD lever will run you about $30 but you can get by without it and they aren't very hard to find. I also recommend a decent sling. I prefer 2 points to anything else but everyone has their own preference.

*edit to add*

Forgot to mention, none of those parts listed require any experience or tools to put together. You basically wind up with a field stripped rifle, slap it together and go.
