Newbie Mistake
Made a newbie mistake today.

Not a mistake at all. Just find a range that allows you to shoot the steel cased ammo. In the meantime stash it somewhere. Trust me, if and when it rains or thunderstorms, you will be very happy to have the ammo.

BTW, it blows my mind, too, that your wife has a problem with ammo in the house.

With Kids in the house, I can understand Moms concern. Emotionally, she is worried about her kids.

When we have visitors here with kids, my wife runs around picking up the ammo and dropping it all in the basket on my desk. She knows the ammo is pretty safe if it is not in the gun and the chances of one of the little ones setting off a live round is slim to none, but the Mommy Instinct kicks in. (Maybe she listened to some of the stories I told her about me being a kid? Who knows.)

I would not lie to my wife.
1. It puts the kid who does know in a bad situation. (Mom and Dad tell me not to lie, but Dad is not honest with Mom...)

2. When the wife does find out, be it now or in ten years..., you'll catch heck about it.

3. Find a place where the kids can not find it/get to it.

4. You would not like it if your wife did the same to you.

Hopefully the safe has arrived by now, or she knows and everything is cool.

My newbie mistake: I bought a pistol before I realized what ammo cost to keep it running. Thank the Good Lord that my wife was understanding. I overcame that problem by reloading. (It is not any cheaper, I just shoot a lot more.)

Leave it in the trunk till you have your safe.....problem solved. Can never have too much ammo so don't sell it.

Is the new std an ammo safe and a gun safe?

Frankly, I have stored guns near ammo for a lot of years. I use these rules of thumb.

The gun must be secured to an unfireable state.

The ammo should be out of reach of kids under 10ish.

Last, out of sight to avoid wandering eyes or wife worries.

Crisis averted.... Gun safe came in today. Ammo out of hiding and into magazine inside gun safe.

Wife even commented, "what good does it do to have a gun safe with a gun in it without ammo? what am I going to do, throw it at someone?"... "Well, honey... actually..."

The proper question really is:

"What good is a gun if its empty and worse yet locked in a safe?"

So you bought a handgun. So you bought ammo. So you have 4 kids in the house. So? I think its due time for some education in the house - for your wife AND the kids.

I have 5 kids ages 14, 8, 4, 3, and 6 months. I always have my EDC pistol on me, cocked and locked, and I have a loaded 12ga. pump next to my bed. The 12ga. has 5 in the mag and one in the chamber, safety on. My wife usually has her EDC sitting on her nightstand, cocked and locked.

All my kids (aside from the 6 month old) knows about my guns and they are quite aware of what one can do with a gun. My oldest son (8 yrs old) has play guns but fully understands the difference between his airsoft and my real guns. For that matter he treats his airsoft guns as if they WERE real guns and is very safe with them too.

Sure I have other guns but those are empty and locked away in a safe with ammo stored in another safe on the other side of the house. My HD and SD guns though are NEVER unloaded except for cleaning or between uses at the range and transport home.

I'm confident my kids won't shoot themselves or others because they were playing with or around my guns.

Remember a gun is useless if its empty and locked up. Same goes for if its got a trigger lock on it (I hate those things for so many reasons). Educate the wife, educate the kids and make the gun useful.

I gotta pick rifle cartridges out of the laundry basket cause I usually have a couple in my pants pocket. At least a couple of 9mm rounds rolled down into my pickup's fender never to be seen again.

I understand your wife's concern, but the ammo is fairly safe. My kids are grown now but I have frequent house guests with children and some adults that may not need to be around firearms.
What I do is; my main pistol remains on my body 100%, every thing else gets a bolt or trigger group ect removed and cable locks. The important part gets stashed until the overnight guests leave.

Hansam - Glad you have a family that is used to having guns around and is super safe with them. My family has not been around guns for very long (a couple months). Therefore, mine will be locked up until needed or taken out for practice for everyone in the house's safety. In a couple years, once at least my wife and I have taken CHL classes and the kids are used to having guns in the house, we'll progress to a point that you are currently at with your family.

Without a safe I can understand and respect the wifes concern about having a firearm and ammo in the house at the same time unsecured. It makes perfect sense and doesn't seem to be emotionally driven at all to me. Either one would be ok by itself, but both in the house unsecured produces increased risk(even if not that great). Much more likely a kid will stick a fork in the electric socket, but most moms now buy plastic covers for them also.

I keep my handguns loaded but in the electronic safe(not 100% of the time). I also store the ammo for the shotgun and rifle in there as the pelican case can be opened if someone finds a spare key. I also have a stungun in the safe and other toys:)

the safe can't be opened without knowing the 8digit electronic code

Leave it in the trunk till you have your safe.....

Back when dirt was new, and I was in the Army ...... they made a point in stressing that ammo was to be stored in a cool dry place: "If it's to hot for YOU, it's too hot for the ammo." Goofy things can happen with ammo repeatedly subjected to 140+ temps....

Question: How hot does the trunk of a car get when it's sitting in a concrete parking lot on a 100+ degree day?
