My wife and I are new to sport of skeet and sporting clays and we are interested in purchasing our first shotguns. I would appreciate thoughts on the best shotguns to start with.

I have been shooting skeet for about (3) years and started out with a semi-automatic 12 ga., this may be too much for the lady. She probably would feel more comfortable with either a 20 ga. or 28 ga..
I ended up with a Browning Citori 12 ga. o/u, model 425 and have had it most of the (3) years. The semi-auto models have less recoil but are harder to clean but are less than 1/2 the price of a model 425 o/u models.
The 20 ga. or the 28 ga. has about the same pattern as a 12 ga. but has less density of shot.

Ahem.... As to the best first gun to buy, most experienced shooters will advise you to shoot several guns before you buy. Most ranges have rental guns for you to try. They also probably have a range pro who can provide some basic instruction, and may be able to provide guns for you to try.
Basic instruction is a good idea in any sport, learning proper stance, safety, basics of each game and other things will make clays more pleasurable. Trying to shoot without basic instruction leads to frustration and dissatisfaction with the sport.
Go with the Mrs to the local club and ask, if they respond negatively try another club!

Not sure about your range but the one near me rents many different types and sizes. I highly recommend you do this a few times before rushing out to buy one. Shotgun fit to each individual is very important.
