New to long-ish range and want help

NO The reticle cross hairs on a viper pst are .18 MOA at all mag . @ 1000yds that is a little under 2" . So a 12" target you would still see 10" of it or 5" on each side of the cross hairs . The problem comes when your at a low magnification at long range both the target and the reticle look small . The reticle is still only covering that 2" area but your eye will have a harder time seeing it .

Check out the second video I posted above from time 2:30 to 3:40 you will see how the reticle is the same proportional size to the target 200+ yards away At both max and min magnifications

The reticle grows with increased magnification on FFP scopes.

The video states "one advantage to the SFP design is that the reticle will stay relatively thin at high magnifications"

So, even if it does not cover the target, it seems that it would cover more of the target than a SFP reticle.

ManikBastrd congratulations on your choice of rifles

ManikBastrd congratulations on your choice of rifles. I have the same exact rifle and I'm also in hot pursuit of those 1,000 yard unicorns. I have a couple of years and a few thousands dollars head start on you.

The bottom line for 1,000 yards is this: the rifle is just the start. You will learn more about bullets than rifles.

You are correct on 20MOA rail. I use Burris Extreme rings and they work well for me.

The long range guys at my gun club advised me that long range is not the place to compromise because it is all about the little things that make a cumulative big difference and that I would save money by buying once, buy the best you can afford. When I didn't listen to that advice I ended regretting it.

I have different take than others do when it comes to optics. As the old saying goes "You can't hit it if you can't see it."

I did replace the stock on my Savage FCP-K. I figure that after I wear out my first barrel I will have the Savage accurized in conjunction with the new barrel.

You are correct . I was not comparing the two to each other .

Wouldn't even a fine-line reticle, completely obscure a 12" gong at 1,000 yards with a FFP reticle?

Just stating that this was not the case and making sure the OP understood . The video states what I said but maybe in a better way . Yes the reticle grows and or gets bigger but the target grows in exact proportion to the reticle .

OK...

So, IF ranging is not a consideration, is there any reason to drop the extra dough on a FFP scope if precision (target) shooting at long range is the use?

Not to hijack, but I'm trying to decide whether to get another Viper 6.5-20 (which I really like), or try a FFP....

Lots of good information on long range equipment here and on how the rifle works for that goal.

I have just recently bought my first piece for this. I have a Savage model 11 VT, 24 inch heavy barrel, 308 win, 1:10 twist. The scope that came on it is not up to par for what I want to do with it. $549.99 plus tax in WV at Dicks.

For optics I am going with SWFA Super Sniper series in 10x42. As you will see in those videos, he has done extensive testing on the optics. This scope is $299.00 and is his pick UP TO I think $1000.00. They passed milspec testing and Rex took extreme measures to destroy his. There is some good information on his videos from someone who seems to have a good knowledge and passion for long range shooting.

Eppie; which stock did you go with?

I would say no with a small caveat . As you increase and decrease the magnification . Your substensions change . I think you would want to always shoot at the max mag or min mag like bart said .This way you can bottom or max it out every time and your dope would be accurate every time . If your anywhere in the middle you need a way to make sure you were at the exact magnification every time . Meaning you have a 4-16 and you like to shoot at 12x so thats the mag where you do all your doping from . The next time you go out you dial your scope to 12x but maybe your really at 11-3/4x and everything will be a little off so you re zero . The next time after that maybe you dial the scope to 12-1/4x thinking your at 12 but the rifle is zeroed for 11-3/4 now your way off . This is all about the sudstensions and not the center cross hairs , the cross hairs should still be correct .

We could go one step farther and say if your always going to dial in your elevation and windage you don't need a reticle with substensions and all of the above does not matter . You do what bart said get a scope with very fine cross hairs and just dial in the elevation and windage for each shot .

EDIT : If this is for a range gun and you will always know the distance as well as where the targets are . You might want to get a fixed 10x scope and everything will work perfect every time .

Thanks to all of you who have replied. I have a lot of great information to work with now as well as some new products to research. To answer one specific question, No I do not currently reload, but I plan to do so in the future for the obvious reasons of accuracy and cost. I also think that it is a very valuable skill to have. Thanks again for all of the replies!
Cheers,
Manik

wvscotsman

Hi wvscotsman,
I apologize for the slow response.

When I was 17 my uncle Sam loaned me my first rifle (an M-16) as a result I put a pistol grip and a magazine on nearly everything that shoots. The only exception is a .22 Beeman pellet gun. So the Savage ended up with an XLR chassis that includes an AI mag and a Swarovski Z6 5-30x50. It looks like this:

The buttstock folds so that I can clean the barrel without messing with the cheek rest
