New Ruger American Pistol

Have you seen this? Maybe I missed the rollout. I came across it on an FB post. Ruger is releasing a new pistol series for 2016 called The American, like the rifle series. Produced in 45acp and 9mm. Looks like a cross between a Highpoint and a Beretta PX4. IDK. I love their revolver lines and the LCPs but haven't ever been ahuge fan of their other pistols. No MSRP yet. We'll see how they price it with function, fit, and finish.

The "American" series is an economy line. I don't know anything about this pistol but if it says "American" on it, I'd expect some cost cutting somewhere in the product.

I'm trying to like it because I love Ruger, but they're making it really hard with this one. Who thinks........ man, if we can just make it look like a highpoint, everybody will want one.

I don't see any resemblance to a hipoint at all.
I wonder if ruger will submit this pistol as a replacement for the M9.

Looks to me like their take on the PPQ.
Judging by the size of the trigger guard compared to the pistol overall, I'm thinking that it's fairly large and thus more comparable to the PPX.

Ditto, although the SR series isn't exactly expensive.

However, I suspect that the American is aimed (pun intended) at the <$300 price range to compete more directly with the S&W SD VE, Walther PPX, and Canik/Century TP-9. The SR9E is not quite this inexpensive.

So what's wrong with the SR series that they can't modernize?
My guess is that the SR9E hasn't met sales expectations.

Can't say that I see any resemblance to a hi point...

I am a bit put off by the way the back strap transitions into the frame. It's like they wanted a beavertail without extending it beyond the back of the slide. Functional? Probably, but it makes it look like the grip was an afterthought that they just stuck onto the frame without fitting them together properly. Other than that one aspect (which is a big one, aesthetically speaking), it looks fine to me.

With a polymer frame, striker fire control, and multiple back straps, it could be a contender for the pentagons quest for a modular pistol system.

What stands out to me is the absence of a thumb safety. I wonder if there is also no magazine disconnect. Both of these are unusual for Ruger. When considered along with the LC9s Pro, this improves my opinion of the company, generally.

As a lefty, I'm also happy to see the ambidextrous slide lever and mag release.

Oh, no - look at that trigger - it looks like a Glock. The ergonomic horror! I already know that some of you can't shoot it.

Anyway, it looks interesting. I'd check out the 45 - got enough 9mms.

With the recent addition of the lower priced E series to the SR line, this is probably going to be another attempt to address the low priced market.
Awhile back there was published info on the actual costs to manufacture some of the polymer framed striker pistols.
Not much.
Should be interesting to see what it is priced at.
Most things get more attractive as the price goes down.
