New Rifle

They're all good choices and it would be a worthwhile goal to eventually own one of each. I'd go with the .243 since it can do everything a .22-250 can but with a larger and heavier bullet. I aspired to getting a .22-250 until I got my .243, now I want a .25-06. There is no end to collecting guns. When the safe is full, buy another safe...

A lot of good replies here to OP's question. But, I think taylorce1 nailed it.
taylorce1; that you over at the 'Fire?

Geezerbiker, .243 is a fine cartridge but I just don't see it as a 1000yd caliber. You need to get up to the 6.5mm diameter and even then handload with a very long bullet to get a high BC in order to have a chance at having a decent 1000yd gun.

If you get on 6br site and look at "Guns of the Week" look at the calibers and how they tune a load for 1000yds. That gives alittle insight on whats need to get those small groups and I think the OP needs to see if that fits what he has in mind.

Most don't understand 1000 yd IBS match rifle. they have two classes Light/Heavy, light shoots a 5 shot group heavy 10 shot group so calibers will vary

Is anyone considering bullet weight for wind resistance ? BC for holding velocity ? The 6.5x55 will do the job as will the 6.5-284 .Both will handle 140-145 gr bullets .The 6.5-284 will drive those bullets to the max limits for accuracy about 2900-3000 fps and do it with reasonable recoil. Offhand I don't know who makes a 6.5-284 but it is a standard cartridge.

As much of a fan of the .270 WIN as I am, there are better choices for 1K target shooting. High BC target bullets in .277 are not that common, and long action cartridges are not as efficient as short ones.

Even an off the shelf .260 Rem would be a better choice.

You'll want a fast twist barrel for the longest bullets you can push at max velocity.......

Savage does. Thanks for all the replys guys.I think after all this i need to really decide what caliber i want now. I was looking at the forementioned 3 just because of their abundance. I know my 308 will do 1000 yards as well, but i just sold 500.00 in brass and another 200.00 pending. Main thing i want is just another long range rifle. Most of you started your collection years ago ( Hate you all) ha ha. Im just starting mine so i have a lot of catching up to do. This would be # 4 for the year. Last year i was looking at the 6MMBR and the 6.5 x 284, both in Savage also. Maybe will have to take another look at them again..

Treat yourself to a custom bud, if you want a collection to catch someones eye its not going to do so with just the same old factory off the shelf guns, build your own and make it mean something to you. 6.5, .264, .257 are all ones to look for

Thats me, I run the same handle on several forums just to keep it simple.

4runnerman, Don't worry about playing catch up just be glad your enjoying what you like.

I've done two 6mm for the VLD bullets plus the 6.5x284 . Myself I think the 6.5x284 is the best 1000yd in the 6.5 caliber and it has a proven track record. If you have bad conditions it takes a skilled shooter for the 6mm VLD bullets got good conditions hard to beat the 6br.

Lots of good 7mm bullets now and the 284 finally come into it's own plus got some wildcats and I think the 7mm are alittle easier to keep tuned. Same with some of the 30cal 185gr on up VLD bullets.

I gave up match shooting years ago but I still keep up with most of it. I know alot try different calibers but for most starting out with a proven winner is easier to work with as you gain more experience and (money) other calibers may come into play.

there an old say cost the same to feed a good horse as it does a bad one so might as well get a good one.

Don't anyone take this wrong but I won't waste my time with 22cal/25 cal or 270 they just don't have the bullets.

Like I said I gave up match shooting but you never loose the urge. I shoot a 284 with a 27" long barrel with 168gr VLD bullets also one of my 30-338mag I shoot a Berger 185gr VLD bullet and those two rifles take care of that 1000yd urge.

If you hand load, I would consider choosing a .22-250.
If you don't, you'll find .22-250 ammo pretty expensive and sometimes hard to get the good factory stuff.

I have both a .223 and .22-250 and, although the .22-250 has a 1:14 twist and the .223 has a 1:9 twist, the .22-250 shoots the same 52 and 55 grain bullets in hand loads as the .223 and both shoot them very accurately. The .223 prefers H335 and H4895 and the .22-250 prefers Reloader 15 and some loads in H4895.

It sure makes buying .223 bullets easy.

The .223 is great but the .;22-250 shoots faster by about 500 fps and therefore shoots flatter.

That would get you a lot close to 1000 yards than the .223.

Even handloading, .22-250 is a horrible idea for a long range rifle. Nothing off the shelf has a fast enough twist to shoot any bullet heavy enough to have decent ballistics.

Yeah, as an engineering exercise you could build a 1:7 twist .22-250, but why? There are tons of off the shelf rifles what can do the same job with as good or better ballistics, less cost and better barrel life.

Myself I think the 6.5x284 is the best 1000yd in the 6.5 caliber and it has a proven track record.

This was about the eighth person to say 6.5mm
