New rifle purchase for Coyote???

Really any rifle in a higher caliber than .22 or .17hmr will do er. I'd be using the .223, a good amount of coyote hunters do.

I've killed a couple with a .22lr ..... shoot 'em in the chest...... their lungs fill with blood and they'll stop runnin' ......

You also don't have to worry abouta lot of pelt damage that way, either.

JoeDorn, it's a rare coyote in Texas that will break forty pounds, total live weight. :) Few of what I'd call shootable deer in Texas that will weigh less than 120 pounds on the hoof.

You have some great guns to fill your needs already, The 270 with light bullets is deadly out to 500 yards, as the 243 is even better.
That said,

My Savage Model 16 from Cabellas is a 22-250 in 12 twist. It shoots the 68-69 bullets out to 600 yards and smokes coyotes dead in their tracks. The very best bullet killing combo is a 60 grain Hornady V-Max @ 3400+fps, it totally removes the hide from standing P-dogs at 350 yards+ and kills any coyote easily without an exit hole. Do not underestimate heavy for calibur bullets in the 22-250. I can get 15 shots thru this gun before it needs to cool down. The 243 shoots even more powder and you might get 10 shots before it gets too hot. The 270 you might get 5-7 before it's too hot. In a dog town this matters.

I'm with PIGMAN, something light enough to carry and move quickly. We hunt yotes in thick woods and I recently bought a Mini-14 in .223 to take with my shotgun on occasion. My Colt HBAR would be a great single gun if we hunted in open areas. As someone else said, the 60 gr V-Max works well in the Mini-14 with 24.5 grains of Benchmark powder.

The new Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle in a .223 or .22-250 will be my next rifle if ever offered.

Unless you just want a new gun, my advice is going to be a little different.

I say use what you've got for a while. Learn what calling coyotes is all about. Learn their habits, how to set up your stands for success, and how to call and out-smart them.

Later, when you've learned all the above, you'll know what cartridge to get to best match your hunting style and technique(s). I've seen a lot of people go buy a "varmint" rifle that's way to heavy, with too long of a barrel for a good calling rifle. They get out there and have coyotes almost in their laps, and that heavy, long barreled rifle is like swinging a full-length stick of rebar around in tight cover.

Seriously, learn what works, and learn what doesn't before you decide what will best work for you.

The 22-250 falls in between the 223 and the 243. It does shoot a little flatter than either. It is a great varmit cartridge for game up to and including coyote. My suggestion is to go to the range and find someone who has one and fire a few shots to determine if you want to own one.

From the rifles that you list that you own, you are pretty well covered for everything with maybe the exception of moose and bear, and there a few of those out there that would argue that.

planning on buying a new bushmaster ORC, and using it mostly for paper, and for the local coyote as well as rat plinking and possibly some short range deer hunts. (here in nw GA my dog is bigger than most deer :-) was wondering a couple things about coyote hunting, because when i was a kid and hunted with my dad he called and 2-3 of us shot em up with 12ga shotguns.... those scrappy little puppies were all over and dumb as a brick. now with the new age of electronic calls, is it worth investing in a good mouth call set, and if so which do you reccomend? and also, anyone know if GA has a bounty on coyote pelts? and what they would be worth?
