New Rifle Choice

Sounds pretty good Black Mamba,

Except, I'd change the 300wsm for the old and tried and true 300 Win. Mag.

Anything the new chamberings will do, the 300 win and weatherby will do better.

300win mag would be what I'm hunting with this Fall, except for my journey into the hunting with Cast Boolits in a 45/70. AWESOME!!!!

Keep em coming!

Before I bought my new Remington 700 I looked at every rifle I could get my hands on. Off the shelf the Weatherby Vanguard trigger was horrible. Gritty, long travel. And I have had a Howa 1500 (same gun) and the lock time IMHO was very slow on it.

A much better choice IMHO is the Tikka hunter in the wood stock (not the T3). Nice stock, smoothest action around and a nice trigger. If I would have seen one in the wood stock I might have bought that instead of my Remington.

Nothing bigger than elk and handloader, then 30-06.
Nothing bigger than elk and DON'T handload, then 308 Win.
More bigger game and NOT recoil shy, then 300 WSM.
Recoil sensitive, then 7-08 Rem.

This is okay but I'd take a .270 Winchester before the 30-06. My BIL (taxidermist) has used one for everything, including elk. Never had one get away.

DTS686:

Any of the short magnums or any caliber with a 30/06 base case will do. However, I want to adress MAGOG's post. Calling hunters killers fills the the anti-gunners war chest. I agree with what MAGOG has to say, but it should have been written more tactfully.

I have a Vanguard in 300 Win. Mag,,my son has one in .270,,my wife has one in .243 and my best friend has one in 7mm Rem. Mag and one in .223.....All of them are VERY accurate,,,,

Okay, I love my .243,.270 win, and .30-06. They are a Win Model 70, Weatherby Vanguard, and T/C Venture respectively. All will shoot anything 1.5 inches or less.

But, if I could only keep one, it would be the 06 for the reasons Ol Coot mentioned a couple of posts above. It can be loaded for anything and if you don't reload, you can still find 150, 165, 180, and 220 grain bullets already loaded and readily available.

Almost forgot. I didn't like the trigger in my Weatherby when I got it. The book says "adjust the weight of the pull but DON'T adjust for creep"!! Listen to the book and if you still can't stand the creep, but a Timney trigger and drop it in. You will love the trigger and I personally really love the 3 position safety. It lets you keep the gun on safe and still be able to work the bolt.

From everything I have Heard, the Weatherby Vanguard is a very accurate rifle, likewise, everything I know about the .308 Winchester is that it is a very accurate cartridge. It seems that if you pair the two together, you will have a great combination.
I recomend that you consider the .308 Winchester for your Vanguard.

I have 3 Weatherby Vanguards, 30.06, .308 and .243. All are very
accurate. The .243 is the most accurate and is a solid 300yd rifle.

I must have missed something...
To the OP, in your first post you asked about the Vanguard in general, and then said you hadn't decided on caliber.

Nowhere did you even mention what the intended use of the rifle is, so it amazes me that you've got a dozen recommendations for caliber already.

Doesn't anyone think there might be better choices than an '06 for busting pdogs? or punching paper at 100 yards?

Until you state the intended use of the rifle, any suggestions you get for caliber are solely based on someone else's pet rifle...

Far as the Vanguard in general, nice platform for the money.
It utilizes the Howa 1500 action- which aside from being a tight, solid action- has also come a long way in terms of aftermarket support (stocks and accessories) for customization.

When it comes to caliber selection, unless you need the power of the big cartridges, you might be better served by a short action caliber.

Been happy with mine. Shot this group with handloads the first time out. Haven't been able to work on this load anymore yet though. Did OK with the Hornady V-max (87gr) & Nosler's balistic tip (80gr) also. I think this will be my go-to rifle this year if I get a chance to deer hunt.

You have not said what you are going to do with this rifle?

If you are going to own one rifle a .30-06 would work.
