New Revolver Acquisition - SP101

Jim Clark's shop in LA is a great place to get this sort of work done - old-time, great pistolsmith who does fine, fine work. Highly recommended!

Charlie Prest of All Custom Firearms in Sierra Vista AZ performed what's called his SP10 package on my pistol...Remove hammer spur...Trigger job...smooth 9lbs....port job...$285.00 when I had it done 11/2 yrs ago....Very nice.. www.allcustomfirearms.com

Very pleased with result...The work does nothing for accuracy but does make the pistol much easier to shoot...Very smooth DAO trigger plus porting makes double taps a snap using .38's and very manageable with .357's...This is my BUG so I seldom shoot it beyond 10 yds...At that range accuracy is excellent as would be expected....Next time I go to the range I may try a few shot at 25 yds...You got my curiosity up......

Try the 25 yards - I'd like to know the results. It is out at the longer distances that the trigger job will help even more - with that short sight radius, you need precise alignment and a trigger that will disturb it as little as possible.

I've found "little" guns do pretty well at 25 if handled with care. For years I underestimated them, until I saw a gamewarden at a match, shooting very well at 25 yards and doing okay even at 50 with a S&W M36.

Kevinch,I was at the show the day before You were there and if I wasn't there to buy a Colt 1911(which I did) I might have been the owner of that particular SP101.I ,like a poster above, have been thinking of getting one of those neat little magnums for a while. If it were mine I'd leave the factory grips on it and break the hammer edges with crocus cloth.Maybe a set of Wolf or Trapper springs. As far as smoothing up Your action, give Tony Molinaro in Dormont a call. His work is first rate.tom.;)

SP 101's are GREAT!!!

I have an SP 101, 2.25", .357 - love it!! I changed the springs, used Wolf and went with the lightest, had to change the main spring to the next to the lightest after a couple of misfires on hard primers. Since then no misfires. I changed the grips to Uncle Mike's boot grips and really like the way it changed the recoil feel, I shoot some hot full power stuff and this works well for me. I shoot it from up close and personal distances to 50 yards. It is quite accurate. I regularly practice with pop cans at 25 yds and 1 gal. milk jugs at 50 yds - lots and lots of fun.
With a good pocket holster and a couple of speed strips, it's my go anywhere all the time gun. Also have a Milt Sparks Executive Companion holster which I really like.
Your price was good for my area. They have been going up quite a bit around here.
Hope you enjoy yours as much I do mine.

I just got one about a week or so ago, and love it. Compared to the the SW M60 I had. The M60 was nice, but I find the Ruger much easier to get apart/tinker with. This board has been most helpful with all sorts of cool ideas. The most troublesome thing was the Heavy Pull. I have the DAO version. I put in a Wolff 10lbs. mainspring, and they made a tremendous improvement. The whole trigger guard area, and trigger is really sharp and needs to be radiused, but it is much less perceptible with the lighter trigger. I also polished all the contact surfaces as another had recommended, and that helped still further. My local smith will radius the entire gun and bead blast it for 80.00 and do a trigger job for 60.00. I am also trying to adapt a Hi Viz front sight to use. I also added a pair of Lett charcoal ruby grip panels. These have a slight palm swell, are smoooooth. I found the factory plastic ones a bit sharp where the screw goes through the panel. Oh last, but not least, the sight picture is quicker than my old Smith. Good luck.
