New pistol owner looking for hi cap 9mm

I rented a new Ruger American 9mm at the range today and put about 100 rounds through it. It's a solid gun and a good value. If you have a chance I'd give one of those a try.

Take a good look at the HK VP9. Striker fired with one of the best out of the box triggers there are. You can find them NIB for right around $600. The grip is extremely customizable to your hand. Regardless what you get... enjoy!

+1 on the HK VP9. I bought one recently. It is really nice. The Walther PPQ is very similar to the HK and I'd recommend giving that one a look too.

Cocked and locked makes a CZ-75b SA or a CZ SP-01 SA the leading candidates with double stack capacity in my book, though you might be able to find a used HK USP in that config too.

You could also settle for the Taurus clone of the Beretta 92F, that has the older style C&L capable thumb safety on it but I can't bring myself to endorse any Brazilian produced firearm.

As noted, the number of DA/SA pistols that can be carried "cocked and locked" is limited.

Can you elaborate on why you would want to be able to do this? Part of the rationale behind a traditional double action (or DA/SA) pistol is that the initial longer, heavier DA trigger pull reduces the risk of an accidental or premature discharge.

If you want to avoid the DA trigger pull by carrying cocked and locked, perhaps a single-action pistol would make more sense. You do lose the so-called second strike capacity, but many do not feel that is much of a loss.

I'm also not clear on why you don't like decockers, unless you simply want to do away with the lever to clean up the pistol. Without a decocker, or a safety decocker, you will either need to clear the pistol by removing the magazine and ejecting the chambered round to drop the hammer, or drop the hammer on a live round. I know that some single-action pistol guys lower the hammer on live rounds all the time, but if that hammer gets away from you you not only will have an unintended discharge, you may also really screw up your hand.

To clarify. I don't like the safety decocker on my sr22. Partly due to the holster I currently have I can not carry on fire with the hammer down for a DA first shot. If it just has a decocker and not a safety decocker Ill be alright with that. But its because of my sr22 that I say I don't like them. I may end up loving one. If that all makes sense:o

I have two DA/SA Beretta pistols with so-called "dead trigger decockers" or safety/decockers, a 92FS and a mini-Cougar 8040F. In addition, I have a Stoeger Cougar 8045F.

I have used the mini-Cougar 8040 as a carry piece and used both the 92FS and the 8045 as home defense weapons.

When carrying the 8040 I have a round chambered and leave the safety on until the pistol is holstered, then carry it safety off, hammer down, relying on the long DA trigger pull as insurance against an accidental discharge.

This is how I want to carry my sr but my current holster doesn't allow it. I can holster but it won't fully secure unless safety is on. It would be annoying if I ever got in a bad situation. That's what soured me on my safety

I would not like that either, but I don't think that is a common problem for TDA pistols with safety/decockers and most holsters. I have certainly not encountered that problem with either my Beretta 92 FS, Stoeger 8045F, or Beretta Cougar 8040F in the holsters I have for them.

With a small miracle, you might stumble onto a used CZ-75 Compact at a Used price for around $500 or less?

Or do you only trust new guns with warranties? All of my handguns are used: CZ-82, with Makarovs and Polish P-83s, plus a Sig 232.
The quality is top-notch, therefore they never need a warranty.

Are there still many German Police (Polizei) Sig 9mm "turn-ins" at decent used prices floating around? My brother found one near/in Evansville IN a few years ago.

I'm with tallball. If you don't plan on carrying it, you should get a full size steel gun (which you CAN carry if you wanted). If it's going to be for HD use as well, then a light rail and night sights would be very useful. I don't know enough about CZ clones, I prefer a real CZ. However, if you can up your budget a bit then a CZ SP-01 Tactical would be PERFECT for you. All steel, accessory rail, night sights, DA/SA with a decocker, 18 round mags, and ergonomics that trash big, chunky Berrettas!

SP-01's have very little felt recoil, and point like the proverbial "hand of God". You can also upgrade them if you wish through CZ Custom or Cajun Gun Works.

P.S. You can carry the SP-0, or any full size steel gun, if you want to. People act like that's impossible, but the gun weighs exactly the same empty as a full size steel 1911 (and plenty of guys still carry those). I've been carrying mine IWB for about a year and I love it. I can't help but want to carry a gun that shoots that good!

CZ P09 or p07..or well any CZ if you want to carry cocked and locked..(aside from decocker only models). I have a p09 FDE and my gold friend has a p07. Both perform flawlessly and allow you to either have a manual safety or a decocker...whichever you prefer. They swap out in a minute. 19+1 capacity on the p09 is hard to beat haha, and if you went with a p07 you can carry a p09 19 round mag as a backup.
