New pistol owner looking for hi cap 9mm

Hi guys. I'm fairly new at pistols and I have a 22lr pistol currently. I've got a gun show coming up in about three weeks and was hoping to find another handgun. I'm looking for a hi cap 9 next. Main purpose will be target shooting and HD. I'm open to all suggestions. Budget is $500 or less.

I've been looking at CZ P09. It looks like a good deal. I do not have a range where I can rent and try out guns. So I will not be able to actually shoot any:(

You would be best served by one as large and heavy as you are comfortable with, something with a nice long barrel. That will help you with recoil, accuracy, and quicker follow up shots.

The only reason for something much smaller and lighter than what you can comfortably shoot would be concealment. For range work or HD most people are much better off with a full-sized handgun.

Go to the gun show and find out what feels good in your hand. If there is a nearby range that rents handguns, that is even better. I don't know what size your hands are. My favorite high capacity 9mm is my CZ75 clone. My second favorite is my Beretta 92 clone. You can probably find both of them on CDI Sales on Gunbroker as surplus for around $300-$400. There are also Canik/Tristar CZ75 "clones" for sale at Academy and similar places for $300-something.

Cnight21,

The CZ P-09 and it's little brother, P-07, are both excellent deals that I don't think you can go wrong with. Definitely underrated and overlooked by most, they are two of my favorites so yes, I am biased towards them over all of the other makes and models out there I've owned.

From personal experience, with everyone who has shot or at bare minimum handled mine, I'm always told how they have a very good natural point of aim and feeling in your hand, the controls are easy to reach and manipulate, and they are excellent shooters, as accurate as you strive to be.

A disadvantage for many is having to train on the heavier, longer double action first shot transitioning to the short, light single action pull for subsequent shots, and then, decocking the pistol. Or, swapping out the decocker and installing the safety lever, enabling cocked-and-locked capability.

Also, the local market for CZ accessories is almost non-existent, and the majority of stuff you might need like a holster, an extra magazine, etc. will probably be acquired online. It's not a major factor for me, but you're not going to be able to go to the local store and find stacks upon stacks of accessories like you do Glock or M&P.

But, from what you stated, it's primarily for HD and range use, so the only accessory you may need is a light and that's it.

Good luck!

I have seen the Beretta 92FS on sale for around $500 or slightly more from on-line vendors fairly recently.

Mec-Gar makes 18rd flush-fit magazines for the 92 and they also make a very slightly extended "plus 2" mag that holds 20rds. Twenty plus one rounds of 9mm is pretty high capacity.

The CZ P07 is an incredible 9mm , priced at about $479 NIB, BUT, my choice would be the SAR B6P, $279-$319 NIB. I own both & the SAR B6P is BY FAR the better value.

Cyanide571. Thanks for the advice. I want to keep my pistols close to stock form. So accessories are not a prod. Most of my ordering will be online anyways. I would rather spend accessory money on ammo:D

tallball got it right. For home defense I might settle for a plastic gun if that was what I liked but when you get to the range and you want to have fun shooting for accuracy a big all steel gun will do the job better. TriStar P-120 (a "clone" of the CZ SP-01) would be a great choice if the trigger fits you well. They have pretty nice triggers out of the box and can be made superb with a visit to Cajun Gun Works if you want.

Stoeger Cougar . . . exact same gun as the Beretta.

Can usually find them at Academy Sports for under $400.

Alloy frame, 15+1 DA/SA, and comes with two mags. Great gun!

You should still be able to find an S&W Model 5906 in good condition for under $500.00. Hard to beat this pistol in terms of reliability, durability and build quality for the money-and then some.

Thanks for the replies guys. Lot of good info. My primary goal is to get a good pistol that would work good for casual shooting matches, plinking, training, and just all around fun without breaking the bank. What caught my attention on the cz is everyone seems to love them and they seem like excellent reliable handguns. Also I like the capacity on the p09;)

I will put in a second for the Stoeger Cougar, especially if cost is a major issue. I have a Stoeger Cougar 8045F chambered in .45 ACP that has been flawless. It is very accurate and comfortable to shoot as it handles recoil extremely well.

Cougars were previously made by Beretta in both Italy and the USA. The tooling used by Stoeger is the same as what was used by Beretta. I have two Beretta Cougars, one an American-made 8000D 9mm DAO and the other and Italian-made 8040F .40 S&W. The Turkish-made Stoeger seems to be as well-made as the Berettas.

My local Academy Sports has been selling the Stoeger Cougar 8000F 9mm NIB for $299 for the last month or so. That is a deal that is hard to beat.

Stoeger 8000 capacity is 15+1.

The P-09 will do all that and impress you while doing it.

I have a thread on here (I need to update that actually) if you search regarding the P-07 which is basically the same gun just shorter grip and barrel. Look it up and let me know if you have any questions or anything I can help with.

As a Life Member of SNM-Sons of Neanderthal Man, I recommend only steel frame pistols. I have a Browning High Power and S&W M659. can't go wrong with either.

I consider 15 rounds the minimum for high capacity in a 9mm, not sure where you're at though.

DA/SA: CZ P-07, P-09, Sig 2022

Striker: FN FNS, Steyr L9-A1, M1-A1, Walther PPQ (might be tight).

DOA: Sig 250 or Walther PPX.

If you don't mind a good used gun, then there are many more very good ones to choose from.

Alright I've narrowed down the features some. I would like to be able to carry it cocked and locked if possible. Not a huge fan of decockers. My sr22 has a decocker and I'm not sure I like it. Also I don't care if it is hammer or striker. DA/SA preferred over DAO. But I will still go to a couple gun shows and handle as many as I can before I buy. Thanks for the info so far guys!

I recently bought a SAR k2p, 279 at CDNN, what an underrated gun, low recoil, unbelievable comfort a great looking gun. For the price you can't go wrong.

No point buying new when there is so much good used iron out there.

Steyr is a sleeper entry. Super pistol. Just doesn't have a big footprint in he US.

Canik is a good CZ clone, just picked one up, lightly used, for $320.
