New NY State AW Ban on the move... Please get involved!!!

I work in the New York State Legislature.

SCHNEIDERMAN sponsor that bill is sure death.

If you don't realize how the NYS Legislature works, bills that are sponsored by minority members (either Republicans in the Assembly or Democrats in the Senate) simply do not reach the floor. The chair of the Rules Committee in both houses is either the Speaker of the Assembly(Silver-D) or Majority Leader in Senate (Bruno-R). The Rules Committee deciedes the "bill calendar" (ie-which bill will reach the floor for the 3rd reading and final vote). If the bill is sponsored by a Democrat like in this case, Bruno will not let it see the floor, it will "die" in rules.

I'll give you a hundred bucks if you can find any significant legislation (ie-not renaming a local library) that Schneiderman was prime sponsor on that reached the floor. Most minority members give up and simply only introduce 10-15 bills a year for show cause they know they will never reach the floor(compared to the 150+ Majority members will introduce). If a majority member likes a piece of legislation that a minority member put out, they will simply copy the bill (often word for word) and introduce it as their own(where it will pass because of majority sponsorship). Politics are Great.

UPDATE: New York Assault Weapons Bill To Be Heard On March 1

Friday, February 25, 2005: A bill that would drastically expand the state's current assault weapons ban by redefining what constitutes an "assault weapon" will be heard in the Assembly Codes Committee on March 1. In addition to expanding the ban, A 2466 would require those who currently own any firearm deemed an "assault weapon" to register it, render it permanently inoperable or turn it in to the police.

Those who choose to register their firearms would be subject to an additional NICS check and would be required to have the firearm tested for entry in to the state's ballistic imaging program. Last week, we reported that Senator Eric Schniederman (D-31) introduced S 2445, which also seeks to expand the assault weapons ban by outlawing many more guns by name and adding specific features to the definition of "assault weapon." Please contact your state Assembly member and Senator today and ask him or her to oppose A 2466 and S 2445!

We all knew this day would come... the first real battle in the war to expand & amend NY's AW Ban. The gauntlet has been thrown down, my friends. The only question left is... how are YOU going to respond to the challenge???

Are you going to stand up & be counted or are you going to continue to wallow in apathy & cynicism?

Are you going to continue to talk tough, but do nothing? Are you an Internet commando, or are you going to sacrifice your time, $$$, and effort to protect & restore our RKBA?

Are you a fair weather patriot, or are you willing to make room in your life for the political activism needed to ensure that we still enjoy some measure of freedom in this state?

Are you ready to acknowledge that this is not just a hobby or pastime that we are engaged in?

Are you willing to admit that this is a bare knuckles brawl to secure our birthright as free men?

Can you finally see that this is a battle to preserve & restore the cultural & philosophical legacy that is the grand American experiment?

Are you ready to shoulder the burden that this is YOUR fight, YOUR chance to shape the course of history, YOUR responsibility, and YOUR opportunity to forge a legacy of liberty and freedom for your children's future?

No free rides and no excuses!!!

Shaggy....Don't insinuate that because I am in PA that my head is in the sand, far from it.

NY is a lost cause, I lived there the first 55 years of my life and have seen the politics of the state go down the toilet. You have no chance there, none!

I'll be shooting my AR here in PA when NY'ers are sheepishly turning theirs in.

Yes they introduce bills in the PA legislature, as they do in every state, and the bills go nowhere. Unlike NY where the REPUBLICAN governor and Senate majotity leader actively support them.

If you folks are heading "On deck" better bring your life jacket.

BOHICA NY.

I didn't imply that at all. If thats what you inferred from my post, you are mistaken. The point I was trying to convey is that we in PA (and yes, I am a Pennsylvanian, though I work in NYC) cannot afford to throw up our hands, say NY is a lost cause, and walk away while our neighbors in NY get steamrolled by this legislation. It will send a clear signal to the antis - blood is in the water. PA is not immune to this sort of legislation and if NY goes, we can expect an even harder push by the antis in our state. Remember the following memorable quote?

"In Germany, they first came for the communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics. I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak up."

I don't know about you, but I'd rather not be in a position at some point in the future saying "When they came for the New Yorkers I didn't speak up..."

Now think about some of the states PA is surrounded by on the east - NY, NJ, MD, DE. All are states with more restrictive gun laws than we have in PA and our legislators are not blind to this fact. Nor does the fact that many people moving to PA from other states are coming from NY, NJ, DE, and MD and bringing their soccer-mom anti-gun values with them. Just look at how many ranges in PA have been shut down in the last 5-10 years. Other than Classic Pistol, can you name me one public range on the eastern side of the state where you ca shoot full auto rifle caliber? I used to know of several but they are all shut down now. If you don't think more restrict gun laws are on the horizon in PA, you aren't looking at the big picture.

Well I am one ex NY'er who ain't no soccer mom.

I think of PA as kind of a stopper, keeping all the liberal bovine effluent bottled up in the North East, except where it oozes around New Jersey and into MD....

As to NY. Watch how many people actually respond to the threat, it will be few if any. NY'ers are whipped and resigned to their fate. That is why so many have land in PA.

I feel bad for the good people in NY but the cause is lost there. And I don't believe in the domino theory either.

BTW I hope you voting NRA members cast a vote for John Cushman, he is one NRA member who has actually carried our water in NY.

Divide And Conquer

An old, but very effective tactic. Being used right now by anti-gunners, anti-hunters, etc ACROSS THE USA.

Wake up and look around. You would be surprised at the number of state anti gun legislation popping up.

We are fighting one right here in Iowa, a place I never dreamed would be a serious battleground. The bill looks exactly like Kalifornia's 1999 legislation. And it was co-sponsored by two Republicans!

These people will never quit.

If you are not active, you are part of the problem.

So... are you a patriot or a pushover?

Are you a citizen or a subject?

What exactly are you waiting for... a written invitation to our ongoing struggle against the creeping forces of tyranny & oppression?

Got something better to do with your time?

No worries… if they take away our guns there’s always golf, right???

This morning, March 1st. at 11 AM, the assault weapons band was supposed to be presented in the New York State Legis. Does anyone know if it passed or not?

While the NYS Assembly web site has yet to be updated, Eagle20 (over at AR15.com) called the Codes Committee this afternoon (Mar 1, 2005) and was told that Bill # A02466 has passed & has been reported to the floor. This means that it now goes to the full New York State Assembly for a vote!

... And It's going to pass the Assembly too if you don't Rise to the Challenge and Fight this BS Tooth & Nail!!!

CALL, FAX, WRITE, & E-MAIL YOUR REPS. AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN...

We lost round one folks... it's entirely up to YOU whether we win or lose the next one.

Carpe Diem

good luck. hope someone has the money to take it to the courts if the law passes. and then its a crap shoot if the SC would hear the case or not

NY PATRIOT.... I'm new to this forum but how about starting a new thread just for signatures, a petition. When it's time, the list can be printed and each of us could sent it to our political reps.
I don't know how to start one or I would. Let's get SOMETHING going!!!
For you guys in surrounding states to New York, TAKE HEED!!, If NY falls, the surrounding states are sure to follow. This is everybody's fight, not just New York's.

TPAW, I've said this many times before, but it bears repeating...

Your desire to fight this proposed "law" is admirable & appreciated, but you need to WATCH OUT FOR MISDIRECTED, TIME-WASTING EFFORTS.

Internet petitions are useless! They make folks think they are actually doing something when they are not. It's a false sense of accomplishment. We need to focus on the stuff that works!!!

POLITICIANS ONLY CARE ABOUT VOTES AND MONEY.

In-person visits, phone calls, faxes, and snail-mailed, typed, hand signed letters are the way to make your opinion heard, because politicians know that if you're willing to expend this much time & effort, you and your family will also vote & contribute to their campaigns (or not)!

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but them's the facts...

NY Patriot.....Perhaps you misunderstood me? What I meant was a form letter signed by as many members as possible on this forum. Then we each print the letter and send it off (snail mail) to the proper political individual.
In essence, we each would be sending the same letter with (hopefully) hundreds of names, to each of our own representatives.
In addition to our local reps., we each could also send one to Pataki via (snail mail).
By the way, has the NRA been trying to help?

Knowing Noo Yawk as well as I do, the best chance for gun owners is in the senate. The Senate is majority Republican and in the past has been the difference in firearms legislation.

Pataki will sign this so get to work!

Don't be a ninny and whine that the NRA did nothing after it passes. YOU are the NRA, get off your ass!

K80Geoff.....We are the NRA.....Not YOU are the NRA.....that's not the attitude to have!
Help from surrounding states would be appreciated. You don't have to live in NY to fight this! This is not a state fight, it's a gun owners right to keep and bear arms fight!
If these bills pass in New York, they will take effect on January 1st, 2006. And guess what K80Geoff from Pennsylvania, your state is next in line!
This is a joint battle for all of us to take part in, not a finger pointing contest across state lines!
It is imperative that we stick together and help one another.
Get rid of your negative attitude and get up off YOUR ass! Your rights are in danger as well, fight for them!

New York Anti-Gun Bill Moves Forward

Friday, March 04, 2005 A bill that would drastically expand the state`s current "assault weapons" ban by redefining what constitutes an "assault weapon" was approved by the Assembly Codes Committee on March 1. In addition to expanding the ban, A 2466 would require those who currently own any firearm deemed an "assault weapon" to register it, render it permanently inoperable, or turn it in to the police. Those who choose to register their firearms would be subject to an additional NICS check and would be required to have the firearm tested for entry in to the state`s ballistic imaging program. The bill is expected to be considered on the floor early next week, so members are encouraged to contact their Assembly member and urge him or her to OPPOSE A 2466!

Time is short, so phone calls, faxes, and E-mails are the order of the day.

The rights that you save will be your own!
