New LCP, failure to feed

Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread, a lot of good ideas were posted here. I took the following actions since my opening post:

  • Checked the mag spring on the original mag, nothing out of the ordinary.
  • Ordered a 2nd mag. The new mag was made in Italy (original in USA), has different font, different surface finish than the original.
  • Rubbed some Flitz on the rails per Rangerrich99's advice.
  • Re-cleaned and lubed the gun with Ballistol, ensured the feed ramp was clean
  • Added some grip tape to aid in holding the gun firm and steady.
  • Took it to range today, see the report below.

I went left to right alternating between the old and new magazine, cycled each mag 2-3 times per box, making sure I had a proper grip the entire time.

The difference was night and day; I did have three hang ups (seen below, one with the new mag, two with the old mag), but only with the Blazer FMJ. I had no issues at all with the Fiocchi, PMC, Herter's, or Hornady XTP.

I'm much happier than the last time I shot it. I plan on running a few more boxes of XTP through it on my next range trip to validate it's reliability. Thanks again for the help!

Glad the Flitz helped. You might try a little flitz on the ramp as well; it's amazing how slick you can get it in just a few minutes. I don't have any scientific proof, but I think it helps 'sticky' bullets slide into the chamber easier.

What specifically doesn't look right, if you don't mind me asking? I'm not familiar enough with the design to know what to look for. Also, would you recommend I fix this myself or send it back to Ruger? Thanks again.

You're way more positive about three hang ups than I would be...

^ this...a 'new & improved' LCP that chokes on ball ammo.? :(

I'd glad I never bought one...if I had to have a micro .380,I'd get a Taurus tcp 738....they run everything & only $200.

.

That's what I bought. Besides price, I got it because it has a last shot hold open that most don't have. I like to know when I've shot the last round without counting.

I've had terrible luck with the little .380's so I won't go near them ever again. I had heard the LCP was one of the most reliable of the lot of them so I'd definitely send it back to Ruger. Don't try to work on it yourself or you may void the warranty on it. In comparison my LC9 and the new LC9s Pro worked flawlessly out of the box. No more .380's for me.

Final (hopefully) update, I went ahead and sent it in for repair and received it back within 10 days. I put another large variety of FMJ and about 30 of my carry (Hornady XTP) though it, all functioned flawlessly, I'd say I put about 125 rounds through it total so far. I also intentionally limp wristed and did some one handed shooting. Anyway, Ruger has lived up to their customer service reputation I've heard so much about, thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I started a thread where I mentioned this last week. In my case, my first four rounds were all FTF's.

Then I changed my grip and it never happened again.
