hi im new to this site and fairly new to shooting i found this site in search of some idea for a new rifle to surpass the 308 capabilties im not sure if this is the right place to ask but thanks anyways

The rifle section is where to post any rifle related questions... Post a detailed question and get ready... There are some very knowledgeable folks on TFL.

Welcome to the forum.

It will help if we know your use for the rifle. Is it for hunting? What size game? For punching holes in paper, and at what distance? Are you new to rifles, or can you handle recoil? There's plenty of help here, just let us know what you're looking for.

Welcome Paul. How do you intend on using this rifle? (Comp, target, hunting, or just an all around general purpose gun)

Jim

Yes, please tell us about the "mission" you will call upon the rifle to perform. It's well within the capabilities of the 308 to do about 85% of all the things we'd want a rifle to do

If you are going to be shooting game at longer ranges, the 308 is ok, but not as good as a 270. If the game is open country elk you might want more power and flatter trajectory, like what you could get with one of the 300 magnums.

For moose and big bears, a 375H&H is about as good as you can get.

If however you want to shoot mostly prairie dogs and paper at 400 yards and less, the 308 is probably more then you’d want. A 222 or 223 is a better choice.

If only small game and plinking are going to be the main use, there’s nothing that beats a good 22 Rim Fire.

Speaking strictly for myself, I have to say that for shooting for fun and relaxation, the very best rifle ever made is a nice handmade flintlock, 32 to 45 caliber

So please let us know what you have in mind to use the rifle for.

im looking for a rifleto basically take care of pretty much anything in the states i want to do some big game and some paper practice with the rifle recoil is not a problem as long as its not going to mame me ha ha ha i was looking at the savage 110 ba it runs a 338 lapua an from what i understand its what the miltary is using as a round an plus the gun looks wicked mean

Well it sounds like you know what you want and by you stating that a Savage 110 interested you I take it that 500-600 bucks is what your looking to spend? The .308 isnt a bad choice and can take down anything in America no problem but there are better calibers out there that wont really kick harder or be any harder to shoot. May I suggest a 30-06 to you over the .308, Its not quiet as known as a paper puncher but is prooven in the field. They are accurate, dependable and ammo is easy to get with a much more variety of ammo weights over the .308. You can get 130gr hollow pts for varmits and use 150s for deer, and even 220s for Moose or Bear. The ends are limitless with this rifle. As for what gun to buy its all choice these days, I myself am not a 110 fan, for that price I would look strongly at a T/C Vanguard. They are guarentee moa with the right ammo and are fairly decent looking rifles. After that I would buy the best optics you can get. Seeing that your looking at 500 dollar or so rifles a Nikon Buckmaster(225 bucks) or Bushnell 3200 (200 bucks) should work very well for you.

Good Luck

Savage are good guns, I have three. And the 338 will certainly take anything in the USA at distance. But the ones that come to mind are the 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win mag and the 338 Laupa Mag, none of these would I call paper punchers, just make sure they have good recoil pads on the stock.

Good shooting.
Jim

The savage runs at about 1950.00 in 338 lapua. Hell of a firearm. Heard great reports from customers on them. You can't go wrong with the lapua. Some people will talk about cost per round but you pay to play!

300 Ultra mag will kill anything in North America. Much less money to shoot.

What in the states is there to hunt that you can't hunt with a 308? Maybe not the best for prairie dogs, but as far as big game the 308 will handle it.

Most game can easily be handled with a 243 or 257 Rbts, that is to and including mule deer. For elk then the 308, 270, 30'06 is all that is needed.

Have you ever shot a 335 Luppy, those puppies kick like a mule. For 90% of the people out there the non magnums are a better bet simply because people can shoot them. Don't take much kicking to develop a flinch that eliminates any advantage you may think the magnums give you.

If you insist on a magnum then the 7mm Rem Mag, or 300 Win will probably suit you.

The heavy guns take a lot of practice, even if you don't develop a flinch, its gonna cost you to shoot it enough to be able to handle it.

The .308 will kill any game animal in North America. The one caveat is large bear at close range. A larger cartridge is recommended there.

As far as targets are concerned, the .308 is a 1000yd+ round.

.338 Lapua will do the same thing and some people think it's ok for big bears at close range.

"...fairly new to shooting..."

I suggest a medium-priced bolt-action .22 rimfire as well as something like the .308. There's quite a learning curve in becoming a good marksman, and the .22 ammo is the least-cost way to learn sight-picture and eye-finger coordination.

The .308 will kill any legal big-game animal in the lower 48...

i have 2 ar 15 s i have a remi 700 308 i have several 22 rim fires a 17 hmr rim fire couple shotguns when i mean fairly new to shooting i mean 5 years into shooting i know my guns inside an out i know an have pushed my guns to the their capabilities so im just looking for the next step i might get a 243 upper for one of my ar15s so im just looking for a very precisise big round bolt action

"very precisise big round bolt action"

With today's machine tooling, very few rifles are not capable of precise shooting. With some minor tweaking, your 700 in .308 should easily be capable of sub-MOA accuracy. Many and many a picture of such groups from that package have been posted here in this forum.

i am good friends with a gunsmith who has built a 243 upper you have to modify the mag it hold about half the ammount but with that round why would u need more thanks guys for the advice i am really liking this site :p

Paul, I am not sure, but I don't think a 243 upper will work on a AR-15 lower.

Not .243 Win, But .243wssm and 6mmx45 will. Not sure if there are other .243/6mm cartridges that will work in the AR-15
