New Glock 17 Mags in a Glock 19: Not So Good

Hi all,
CDNN has a sale running this week on Glock mags so I figured I'd take advantage. I picked up 2 G17 mags and 1 G19 mag, all of them new production compatible with Gen 4. I just got done using them in my Gen 3 G19 at the range and I was pretty surprised. Loaded to capacity I could insert the magazine, release the slide, and nothing. I was sling shotting the slide so I'm not sure if it would have worked had I used the slide stop. The slide would run into the top round and stop dead cold. The top round barely moved. It took downloading to at most 15 rds to get the top round to feed reliably. Even pulling the slide back and trying again didn't work. I did get get the top round to feed when 16 were loaded once or twice, but not reliably.

My hope was to use these as backups for home defense to have a few extra rounds. Right now that's not in the cards. I had no issue with the 15 rd G19 mag loaded to capacity nor have I had an issue with any of my G19 mags in my G19. Is this just a really stiff magazine spring causing the problem? It was stiff getting the last couple rounds in but far from impossible. I'd appreciate any tips.

The recoil spring has a total of 560 rds on it. This Glock is a month old, bought as new production.

Thanks Palmetto, will do!

Assuming these are new Glock factory Gen4 mags, try down loading the mags to 5 rounds and make sure you can cycle all five rounds & slide lock each of these mags, load a additional round in each reload cycle until you work your way up to the 17 capacity.

If these are not new Glock factory Gen4 mags, I'd return them to CDNN

Mag springs are still new and stiff. Load em fully and leave them for a few days. I'm betting the settle down.

As I said in the original post I did the same but in reverse. 15 rds and below and it will work generally well. 10 rds and below it works 100%. To be fair I didn't fill out a complete test matrix from 1-17 rds. These are new factory mags from CDNN.

Most likely spring pressure issues... Could be incorrectly assembled mags... Maybe.

As was mentioned, letting the mags sit fully loaded for several days may help.

I use 17 mags for the reloads on all my Glocks, 17's, 19's, and 26's. Havent had any issues with any of them. That goes for the Korean mags as well.

The only mag related issues I have run across, is using the 33 rounders in my 26's. With the 26's, your hand actually contacts the mag (its not an issue with the others), and can cause malfunctions.

Not that Id be happy about it happening, and not really something Id expect from Glock, but Id probably disassemble the mags (make sure the springs look right) and reassemble them, and then do as others have suggested, and load them up and let them sit a day or to and see what happens.

IMHO new mags are bought to avoid problems, not to require rebuilding themselves!Back they go! Good Luck.....:D

Option 1. Return for replacement (see the above post)
Option 2. Tear em down and inspect CAREFULLY. Im thinking a plastic flash left over from molding is causing the follower to hang up towards the bottom of the tube. When downloaded the folower does not hit the flash.

I too run the 17's in all of my Glocks without issue. The 33's don't work in the 17L or in the 26. I take this to be an issue with the angle of the feed ramp as it meets the magazine on those 2, though it really doesn't make sense.
My Gen. 3 19 works with everything that will fit in it.

Glock mag springs (new mags) are notorious for being very stout... And if they're stout enough, they could keep the slide from cycling.

If they'll chamber with one round or two rounds downloaded, that would suggest strong springs (and not something more "physically" mechanical. In that case, just leave the mags FULLY loaded for a week or two.

That's weird. I've never had an issue with Glock 17 mags in my 19's. Not even the Glock 18 mags have ever had an issue

Neither had I. Nor have I had issues with fullsize M&P mags, fullsize P320 mags, fullsize XDm mags, the list goes on and on. When I released the slide and it stopped on the round I was pretty shocked. I've even used Wolff extra power mag springs in G19 mags that I use a lot and despite being notably stiff this never happened. These are just factory springs in these G17 mags.

As stated I have them loaded all the way and sitting in the safe for a week and then I'll see where I stand.

Will they feed with them downloaded a round or two? If so, then I think it's SURE that the strong springs are an issue. Otherwise, it may be something else.

Any noticeable difference between these problem mags and ones that work right?

Has to be at least 2 rds down to feed, 3 rds down to feed 100%. Lower than that and there are no issues. I agree that springs are the only issue I can think of.

Not that I can see. Molding on the body seems good, feed lips look straight, and the followers don't seem to be tilting.
