I want to spend $1000 or less and get a real nice new bolt action. I will be getting stainless for sure and am open to wood or synthetic. I don't want to debate caliber but for everyone's information, I am going to get a quarter bore and it will mostly be used for paper, coyote and the possible deer or pronghorn. I put a poll on this but if you have another idea I would like to hear it. I am leaning towards the Browning myself.

Might wanna check out the new Montana Rifle Company ASR/XWR. They were named Field and Stream rifle of the year and look like a quality rifle. In my opinoin the A-Bolt/X-Bolt line, along with many Brownings are overpriced.

Also thought I'd mention that if you're wanting a really nice rifle, I'd forget the Ruger and the Vanguard, good guns, just don't have the the nicer finishes found on other guns, the ER Shaw has that ugly (in my opinion) Savage action, Kimber has had some QC issues, and don't know personally, and find my 75 Sako quite nice, but have heard that the Sako A7 is overpriced and no better than any other factory gun for much less.

My vote would be for a Ruger M77 Mk II or the Browning X-Bolt. ...But, Ruger decided to simplify the action and production process, yielding the Hawkeye. Though the Hakeyes in my family are good rifles, I am not a fan. So, the vote is for an X-Bolt.

A Tikka T3, everyone that I've heard of that owns them loves them.
I love mine, nice and light, smooth bolt, and really accurate, easily shoots under 0.5" groups at 100yrds, closer to .25"

Out of the list you posted I would select the X-Bolt.... Although the A7 is a great rifle, I just can't get over how cheap it looks compared to the Sako 85 series rifles... If I buy a Sako it will be a Grey Wolf...

Go Savage

You can buy an old one or a new action, order a custom barrel and then install it yourself. The Accutrigger versions are great, the older ones might benefit from a trigger upgrade. They are scary accurate, and you can interchange barrels in about ten minutes.

don't get a Savage, they're ugly lol

I'll take ugly all day long and twice on Sunday.

No Savage? They dont only make low priced hunting rifles they have more expensive models also for what you are looking at doing.

I realize this, I've had a F-Class 6.5x284 that was pretty high dollar, and I'm not trying to slam savage owners but their ugly action and barrel nut sickens me

Already have a savage....

I appreciate everyone's love for Savage. I already have a Savage in 22-250. I want something different. I own several handguns all of different makes. I like variety.

I voted for the Browning, also. If your are considering other models, I'd go with the Tikka. Have heard & read some good things about this rifle. Just my $.02
