New .45-70 gov

So I have been wanting a .45-70 for some time now, and through some trading got my hands on a new marlin 1895gbl. I have order XS sight rail and ghost rings. My question is which scope is the best to get for my aging eyes? Should it be a traditional scope, scout, maybe something in a red dot or reflex? I was thinking along the lines of a shotgun slug scope, because of the recoil. All comments are welcome and thanks.

Recoil with the Marlin , especially if you use 300 gr bullets and don't hot load is not great at all !!
I have a Leupold Shotgun scope which works very well considering the short range shooting here and you get the proper parallax.
 
I have a Marlin 1895 G in 45/70 also and with my eyes (I'm 58) I put Williams WGRS aperture sight with a Williams Firesight on it. That front sight really shows up and I have no problem seeing it even in the woods. This setup really helped me with this rifle so much did the same setup on my 336 30-30.
 
I have been super impressed with the Redfield 2-7x33 Revolution on mine for the last 3 years. Great optics for not much money, with plenty of eye relief...

Well, I'm seventy and have catarac surgery looming in my near future but I can still get a good sight picture using a Williams "FoolProof" receiver sight. Imo, some rifles (most lever-action carbines) lose much of their splendid handling characteristics (which is one of the best reasons to hunt with them) when a scope is screwed on top. Several of my rifles (including Winchester Models 94 and 1886, a Marlin Model 39, a Remington Model 760, a Ruger Model 10-22 and a Savage Model 99) have Williams aperture sights mounted on them.
 
My 1895GBL wears an Aimpoint 9000SC over the receiver in a traditional scope mounting position. I'm farsighted in my dominate eye, so projecting the dot on the same plane as the target works great for me.
 
As mentioned on another forum, I recommend the Leupold Mark AR series

Uprange: Minimal weight/dimensions
1X is de rigueur for close-in/wide-scan/fast-reaction work.
4X is about optimal for 200yd max work

...AND...

It's the perfect pairing for that rifle Downrange:

Satisfying my intended purpose just fine and without problems: I have a simple Redfield scope and am very happy with it on my 45-70. Mine is reliable, holds zero and is very accurate without high cost.
 
Either a straight 2.5X or 1x4 variable would be good. I would go with the 2.5X in a quality scope such as Leupold.

My wife wanted a scope on her Marlin 336, and after some trial and error, I found a combination that works pretty well. I would think this set up would work well on an 1895.

A Leupold FX-II 2.5x20 Ultralight scope, with a Weaver 63B Aluminum base, with Leupold aluminum Rifleman low-height rings. The total weight of scope, base, and rings is 9.5 ounces according to my scale. This is not enough weight to screw up the handling of the rifle. The 2.5X fixed magnification scope is fast on target, and has a lot of eye relief.

I have a picture of it here with medium-height rings. These rings didn't work, so I replaced them with the low rings, which are perfect.

I'm going to chime in as the "cheap" guy here... I wanted to try a scope on my 1895, but I wanted it to be pretty small and light. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on one, because I wasn't sure I'd be leaving it on the rifle.
I found a Tru-Glo scope that was intended for shotguns, with a diamond shaped reticle. I think it was about $80 brand new.
I've shot probably 200-300 mild to moderate rounds through the rifle with zero problems. The sight picture is clear (at least at the range), and the diamond reticle pretty much exactly frames the bull at 100yds. I've been very pleased with the scope so far. It is a 4X, so acquiring a target quickly is really not difficult. I'm looking forward to trying it on game, hopefully this fall.
This was my first foray into the budget priced scopes for semi-serious use.. my other rifles have Leupold, Burris, and Bausch and Lomb Elites on them.
