New .44 Special en route!

Stopped by my gun shop (LGS for you youngsters) and saw a beautiful color case hardened single action, 4 3/4" barel, no sign of any safety mechanism. Only problem, it was in .45 Colt.

I mused over that fact when the salesman said it was available in .44 Special. Didn't have one, but if they were in stock, they could have one in a day or two. Well, I went home and checked, and sure enough, they were in stock. Went back to my gun shop next day and plunked down the money. Expect it to be here tomorrow. And I have 100 rounds of freshly loaded .44 Special!

Show us your Photo's, Key-mo-sah-be !!

Make and model? 44 Specials are high on my list of 'gotta have more' !

Mr. Wright, good for you, I've never owned a big bore revolver something that has been lacking in my life, and I need to cure that one day soon.

Swami say , I see a black bird on the handle , eet looks like a hawk. I see an "R." Ah ... , but the glass grows dark . Or possibly stainless steel ? Only time will tell what type of revolver has been procured by the mysterious Mr. Wright. Inquiring minds want to know.

CCH and new eliminates Ruger.

New USFA's are scarce as hens teeth these days.

Going to guess a new Uberti or Colt.

(please let it be a 44 Special New Frontier that pops up in this thread )

If you are talking a "Safety Mechanism" you can't be talking about a Colt SSA or New Frontier so must be a Ruger, Italian, or other make.

Also, nothing wrong with the .45 colt so why not buy two, one in each caliber !!

I think you may be right! A few years ago ca 2008 I found and secured, AFAIK, one of the very few SAAs in "dedicated" .44 Sp (ie not .44-40 Convert w/ .44 Sp cylinder) of the "4th" (late 3rd) Gen period - one of two or three I've seen (the other two from the same vendor a year apart)--non-cataloged. I'd be delighted he landed one of those - since, alas, it's gotta be inevitable I'm not the only one - might as well be a fellow forum member! Otherwise a New Frontier may be it. Unless Colt's very recently changed its catalog, oddly they re-intro'd the NF in .44 Sp but have yet (since the 80s) to re-intro the fixed sight SAA in the chambering as a catalog item. It wouldn't surprise me one of these days to see it though, and I'm surprised we haven't yet.
Nothing like a .44 Special!

The O.P. said no sign of a safety mechanism.

Ruger discontinued (faux) color case hardening a few years ago.

It's clear we're not talking about a used gun here if it's "in stock"

Many 45 Colt revolvers (Colt branded ones in particular) have cylinder throats that are all over the place size wise.. Many being over sized, hurting accuracy..

This doesn't seem to be as much as an issue with the 44's for some reason.

I can see why someone would prefer the 44 , particularly in a Colt (again... another sign pointing in the New Frontier direction)

:)

I went to pick up my Colt Police Positive .32-20 the other day and there, in the consignment case, was a Lew Horton 3" Model 24-3 in absolutely beautiful condition.

No box and no paper work, but it was all I could do to keep from bringing it home with me to be the little brother to my 6.5" 24-3.

Price was $750. High, but reasonable for what I've been seeing on Gun Broker and Auction Arms lately.

New .44 Special is here........

It's a Uberti from Cimarron, a Model "P", 4 3/4" barrel, .44 Special. Still warm from the ride home.

Hope nobody is disappointed its not a Colt, but price escalated beyond my range.

As to why not buy two, a .44 and a .45, I did just that:

The .45 is the Flat Top I bought a couple of weeks ago. I'd been saving for a Colt New Frontier, but the price kept getting just out of reach, so I settled for these two Ubertis.

I hope I didn't disappoint anybody!

Nice new six shooter there. I've been eyeing one of those.

Since you have many different makes of SAA revolvers, where does the Uberti Cattleman and Cimmerron fit in the quality department compared to Ruger on through Colt and USFA? A couple of weeks ago I bought myself another New Vaquero 45LC (sold the last but regretted it). I'm looking at getting either a Cattleman or Remington 1875 from Uberti or Cimmerron in the next few weeks.

You have quite a collection and alot of valuable experience with revolvers. Thanks for sharing.

While you can't beat Ruger for ruggedness and durability, the Uberti and Pietta reproduction Colts guns have that great c-o-l-t click sequence when you cock them. Might be just lore, but a shooter told me once that Uberti lets different resellers choose among finished guns in some sort of pecking order. With Beretta now owning Uberti, that might have changed - if it were true in the first place.

Anyway, I have four Cimarron single-actions and they are great. Two are "Evil Roy" models and were slicked up by Cimarron to his specs. Two I had ordered directly from Cimarron because I wanted the optional original finish and also wanted them tuned and with a light trigger (they farm out the tuning to talented local gunsmiths, as I recall). It took eight months to get them, some of that because the models weren't in stock when I ordered, but the guns are awesome and have nice crisp 2.5 lb. triggers. My vote would be for Cimarrons any day, within the Uberti "stable." After that, Taylor's Smoke Wagon has a great reputation and they also have a custom shop.

And a bit of a pitch for Pietta's Alchemista. It has a nice Army grip and a wide trigger, which is great for me because I'm left-handed. True Colt clones have a skinny offset trigger. I'm very happy with its quality, too. Also had it tuned, but not sure who did the work.

Bob Wright - sorry to barge in, but I have to hit the sack and I think we share pretty much the same enthusiasm for these guns, from what I've read of your posts. Hope the new one shoots as great as it looks.

I've decided to get a Cimarron Model P too. I handled one of their Evil Roys in the shop today and, while I'm no SAA expert, that thing was smooooth.

Of course now I face the classic dilemma: the classic .45 Colt, or a .44 Special to match my Bulldog?

Life is full of difficult decisions.

Never apologize for adding good conversation with me! I enjoy gun talk as much as I do shooting, well, almost. Always glad to get input from other nice folks.
